HEAVY SELLING, SHARP DECLINE IN EVIDENCE EARLY Many Orders as Exchange Opens, With Active Issues Lower. A’// United Press NEW YORK, Dec. 31.—Heavy selling orders poured into the stock market in early dealings today and a sharp decline took place in active issues throughout the list. That some of the offerings were due to a ! desire to establish losses against iJI-G taxes was evident from the ' large number of sales for cash in Alack Truck and other issues which are down Substantially from the ; year’s hTghs. Bat the heaviness displayed by /Baldwin, General Motors, Steel, and : other industrial leaders could not be ascribed to this cause. The best explanation of the pressure on these stocks appeared to be thac professionals were hammering prices with the idea of starting liquidation on tr basis of nervousness over the Mexican troubles. SURVEY SHOWS AN INCREASE IN , FARM VALUES Government Report indicates Rea! Estate Worth More. WASHINGTON, Dec. 31.— The value of farm veal estate has shown an apparent steady trend toward stability since the peak of 1920, the burea-u ,of agricultural economics, United States Department of Agriculture, announced today in a preliminary report of the farm real estate situation based on a survey begun this year by the division of laud economies. Although there is as yet no assurance that the bottom has been leached, according to the report, the average value per acre in the United States has shown a steadily lessening rate of decline during the fiveyear period. • The decrease in values up to ?/arch 1, 1920, the last date for / which information is available, represented a decrease of about onethird from* the high point of 1920. Reports of the recent agricultural census as of Jan. 1, 1925, recorded a drop of about one-fourth during the preceding five-year period. Stable Tendency The 192 G values, according to the bureau’s data, were at about the level Qf_l9l7, which in turn is about 25 jfer cent above the 1912-14 average, regarded as pre-war. The tendency toward stability is reported to be a reflection of the moderate, but steady upward trend of net incomes, and in the-combined index of farm products prices since the low point of the depression period. Two factors which the bureau believes may help to check further declines in farm values are announced reductions in farm mortgage interest rates, possible further easing of the credit situation consequent upon im7provomeht in country banking conditions and the large supply of funds ' Peking employment in the investment markets, and the probability that in"a number of areas the foreclosures and other forced liquidations have excited most of their influence on values. Basis of Report The bureau’s conclusions are based upon 20,000 reports from farmers, dealers, land bankers, appraisers and others in close contact with conditions. in the farm real estate market. Tire survey Is to be made annually and the report is to be known as the farm real estate situation. The present preliminary report has been published as a mimeogrnplaed pamphlet which shows the trends of real estate values by regions, and changes which have occurred in farm ownership". Back in the pre-war days Louisiana was famous for its lotteries and mint juleps. Now it’s famous for its pretty girls. Here’s the latest bit of justification for that fame. She’s Miss Vida Pelayo of Baton Rouge, acclaimed the most charming co-ed at Louisiana State University.

.Salesmen! Annual Sales School Reopens

We will enlist in our organization a limited number of earnest young men who have an ambition to make a permanent success in a profitable selling field. These men need not be experienced, provided they meet certain requirements. They must be healthy, intelligent, and, above all, industrious. Each student will receive a monthly compensation, sufficient to carry him through his training period. The school will be completed at the proper time for him to take advantage of the automobile show and the spring selling season that follows it. Selected applicants will be put through a thorough two months’ schooling at our expense in preparation for their work. On completing this satisfactorily, they will be assigned, to a selling unit on a commission and bonus basis, with an earning power limited only by ability and effort. This is a two-way proposition. We will expect certain definite things from the applicant, and in return will see that his efforts are made profitable to him. For the man who will work intelligently and consistently, we have certain very definite and permanent inducements to offer. See Mr. Wagner or Mr. Rice Monday Morning Fo L 0 Smfford Cos 833-37 N.
