friendly smile, ’cause that was always Santa's style. He knew that lie would surely be at everybody’s fireside. Os course, this all took place last night, and now old Santa's out of sight. He called upon the boys and girls and left them lots of toys. Right now we know that, bless his soul, he's headed back to his North Pole. He’s satisfied that he has spread a lot of Christmas joys. And in the meantime all the band of Tinymites were still on hand. Today we find them riding down a monstrous icy hill. Old Santa gave them all a sled for Christmas then the old man said, “Now please be careful so you do not spill.” The Tinies all feel good because they surely love old Santa Claus. Their thrilling trip through Santa Land they never will forget. That’s why they're shouting loud today and having lots of fun at play. And do they feel the spirit of the Christmas time? You bet. They dragged their sled upon a hill, and for a moment stood quite still. Therf Scouty shouted loud to all the others. "Hop aboard!” The wildest scramble followed quick and they all thought the sled was slick. As soon as they were seated, “Here we go!” wee Coppy roared. And did they go? Dh. yes, indeed. The sled right quickly gathered speed. And as they skimmed along the snow, there came a boisterous roar. Then downy shouted, “Oh, what fun. But. gee, our trip is just begun. I wonder if we’re safe and where our sled is headed for?” (Copyright, 1926, NBA Service, Inc.) (The Tinymites land in a snowbank in the next story.) OLD NAVY SHIPS COSTLY Ex|ense for Repairs Disclosed in Recent Report. Hu United Press YVASHINGTON, Dec. 25—Because no new battleships or destroyers are being built by the United States to take 'the places of the older vessels, their maintenance is becoming more expensive, the Navy engineeieing 2hief says in his annual reixut filed with the Secretary of the Navy. Repair work on machinery has increased from $3,230,000 in 1923 to SB,989,000 in 1926. Six battleships have been converted from coal to oil burners during the year, it is reported. Four vessels, the submarine tender Holland and three submarines, have been constructed during the year and eleven ships are now being built. The United States Government has more scientific experts at work in the eradication of obnoxious insects than all the other nations of the world combined.

FRENCH CLOCK, WATCH IKING IS IPORTANT Monk, Who Became Pope, Invented Spring-Driven Timepiece. Bn Times Special PARIS, Dec. 25.—Watch and clock making is on important and very old Industry in France, where the first clock was constructed by a monk of Aurillac called Gerber who, in 999, became Pope under the name of Sylvester H. As an industry, however, dockmaking in France can be traoed to 1660, while watch-making was founded in 1767 when Frederic Japy first arranged, in his native village near Belfort, a small workshop for the mechanical manufacture of watch works, which till then had been made with a file. The Industry thus founded rapidly developed and in 1793 a “National YVatch-Making Factory’’ was opened in Besancon which has, from that time, been the principal center for the industry. Annual Output According to figures compiled by Lopls Trineano, the total annual average output' of France amounts to 2,7)00,000 watches, representing a value of 218,000,000 francs. Adding 8,500,000 francs for sparo parts exported In 1925, (lie total annual value amounts, In round figures, to 230,000,000 francs. The minimum number of workers employed In this industry Is 20,000, of which about. 3,000 arc women. Out of 1,000 persons thus engaged nbout ten are skilled mechanics, 230 master watchmakers, 640 specialists and 120 manual workers. It takes four years of study to become a master watchmaker. Suffered Ijjann War French watch making suffered greatly from the war, but since 1918, with the exception of the two unfavorable years of 1921 and 1922, French experts have shown a steady progress. In 1925 exports, amounted to 22,500 quintals, and customs statistics show that France annually exports watehworks valued at about 2.000,000 francs, watches it about 10,000,000 francs, and spare parts about 6,000,000 francs, exclusive of the individual purchases of tourists. The clock-making branch includes the manufacture of a variety of instruments other than timie-pieces, such as automatic machines, musical boxes, meters for indicating and registering speed, various instruments employing clock-work, as well as instruments used In laboratories, observatories, etc. Customs returns show that in 1925 exports in the clock-making branch totaled 76,728.000 francs and imports 19,181,000 francs. , Marriage Licenses F<lv in Sayre. 26.
