SEVEN IN JAILBREAK Garage Watchman Believed Ftailly Wounded by Prisoners. Bn United Prr.tt BIKMINGHAM, Ala.. Deo. 20. Seven prisoners escaped from the Jefferson County Jail here in a darJng delivery Saturday. H. M. a nearby garage, was shot five times and perhaps fatally wounded by two of the men who s*tole an automobile and fled. The break came shortly after midnight when Inside Warden Wood was locking a noisy prisoner in a punishment cell. Wood was slugged by an inside trusty. Taking Wood’s keys, the trusty unlocked two other cells, liberating five men. With Wood’s gun they went to the office and covered Warden Underwood and then locked both guards in the punishment cell. COOLIDGE CHANGES MIND Approves Building of Ten Naval Cruisers Previously Opposed. Bo United Preen WASHINGTON, Dec. 20.—President Coolidge has approved House Naval Committee recommendations for building ten new cruisers for the Navy. Announcement of the President’s approval of the bill was made Saturday by Representative Butler (Rep.), Pennsylvania, chairman of the committee. He said the President had given "his entire and cordial approval” for the construction of the vessels. Approval by the President came as a surprise, ns he had previously stated he believed work on three cruisers already authorized should be held in abeyance pending a decision on another world conference. Her© is a list of needy families for The Times Santa Claus Club to care for this year: FAMILY No. 91 Two boys, 10 and 8, girls of 7 and 5’ whoso mother has been sick and whoso stop-father is out of work, are holding that The Times Santa will remember them. The children need underwear and other clothing. Dispensary aid has been giving the mother treatments, and recommends a basket of- food also. FAMILY No. 92 A man who has been seriously ill and who will not be able to work for many months, would appreciate a basket of nourishing food, such as fruit, eggs and bacon for Christmas. His wife and her mother are constantly in attendance and a cheering gift would he very acceptable. FAMILY No. 93 Seven boys are in need of something warm to wear, and two girls have asked for galoshes and a doll. The boys are 16. 14. 13, 7,6, 4 and 2; girls are 11 and 5. The boys in the order give would appreciate gloves for the two older boys, a coat for the next one, dump truck for the 7-year-old, toy mule and horse and teddy bear for the three little ones. The oldest girl has been wishing for months for anew dress. She has not had one made Just for her for many years and her heart's desire is for a dress like other girls have for Sunday. The girl of 5 wants a sleeping doll which she Bays she will keep always. Family Welfare Society commands a generous basket for this family of nine, count ing the mother and father. FAMILY No. 94 Insufficient income in this family makes it necessary for someone to play Santa to three children, a boy of 11 and girls of 10 and 2. The boy would like a mechanical toy, perhaps an auto, and the girls want dolls more than anything else. A basket is also recommended. FAMILY No. 95 A woman with an only son who is her sole support with an income
of sl3 per week, is in need of clothing. Warm underwear is badly needed at this time. K basket for Christmas day would be welcomed. FAMILY No. 96 A little family of mother, father and two small children will be thankful for anything provided to make a happy celebration on Christmas day for the little ones, who are a girl of 2 and baby boy of 2 months. A basket is recommended also. FAMILY No. 97 A widow with a small income from the Government, due to her husband dying from lung trouble contracted during his stay in the trenches, is trying to make ends meet and supply the for her Httle girl of 6 and boy of 2, for Christmas. A doll for the girl and toy for the boy with a nice basket would be thankfully received. FAMILY No. 98 A bright little boy of 11 has Just been brought to his home from the hospital and ho Is too weak to ask for anything for Christmas, but his mother and father know that he is thinking about the good times he had last Christmas. The mother is grippled and cannot work, and the father has been out of work except for small odd Jobs around the neighborhood. A nice basket of nourishing food for the convalescent would be greatly appreciated. FAMILY No. 99 A Negro family of seven children, the father of whom has not been employed steadily, are looking forward to Christmas day, hoping that toys will be provided. The girls are 14, 9 and 8, and they would like books and dolls: the boys are 11, 7, 4 and 2 and they all want toys that will run mechanically. EX-GOVERNOR TO SPEAK Former Missouri Official Will Address State Bar Association. Former Governor Herbert Spencer Hadley of Missouri will be the speaker at the mldwiifter meeting of the Indiana Bar Association late in January. Secretary Joel Baker announced today. The meeting is to be significant, as it will be held while the Legislature is in session and tlv proposed changes in criminal proeeedure outlined by the committee on Jurisprudence of the State bar will be discussed. Hadley is chairman of the jurisprudence committee of the American Bar Association and head of the national committee on crime.
