INDIAN’S AVERSION TO FARMING NOT DUETOLAZINESS Younger Generation Proves Liking and Ability in Agriculture. By Timet Bveciai CH2LLOCCO, Okla., Doc. 17.—The Indian’s traditional aversion to agricultural work is not duo to laziness, but rather to lack of confidence in the outcome of the work and in his own ability to manage his business, according to Clyde M. Blair, superintendent of the United States Indian School here. It has long been contended that the Indian could not be a good farmer. This theory has been effectually disproved by the successful results obtained by students here who have operated farm projects for three year*. Now Operate Twenty-Three The first year that the scheme was tried out, only four farm projects were operated. The second the number grew to twenty. Last year twenty-three such projects averaging seventy acres each were operated by the Indian boys. The boys lease farms on the share plan whereby each young farmer receives one-fourth of the crop he raises. Horses, machinery and seed are furnished by the school. The boys do all their own work in ad--1 dltion to taking care of their academio studies in school. Half of each day Is spent on the farm and the other half in the schoolroom. The work is conducted under the direction of practical farmers, but the boys are encouraged to make all decisions for themselves. Not An Rich "Not all Oklahoma Indians are in the favored class that rides in expensive motor cars and enjoys other luxuries afforded by leases on rich oil and mining property,” says Mr. Blair. “A majority of the youths who attended school here are from the poorer tribes, ayid most of the boy farmers are dependent upon their own resources for expense money. "Nearly all of the students, however, have allotments of farm land. They are being taught farm management so they may know what to do with their own land after they leave school, and that they may act as economic missionaries to their people." GAIN IN DRINKING, SUR VEYINDICATES Sale of Flasks and Cocktail Shakers on Increase, According to Merchants —Many Bought for Presents.
Drinking in Indianapolis Is on the increase ij the sale of flasks and cocktail shakers is a barometer, for these articles are in great demand as Christmas presents, according to fifteen downtown stores that offer pocket flasks and cocktail shakers for sale. Os the stores visited, ten said they had sold twice as many flasks and Bhakers this year as they did last; two said they sold twice as many flasks in the laßt two months as they sold in the two years previous; three Bald they hadn’t sold a flask in the last year. One-llalf Pint Popular The best sellers in the flask line, according to the canvass, are the white metal, non-corrosive type with half-pint capacity. When asked what type of people buys the flasks the dealers stated that every type from thugs to bank presidents are customers. Popular opinion has it that the greatest number of flasks are carried by college men. But the dealers say this is not true. Even a Minister • "The public would be surprised if it knew the facts about folks, who carry and use flasks,” one dealei said. "We have sold them to some of the biggest business men in the city and State, men high in politics and I even sold one to a minister. How do I know he was a minister? I have heard him preach a number of times. What they carry in the flasks is not my business. Probably SAVES FRIEND LAWRENCE, Mass., Dec. 17.—Patrolman John Haffner and his friend, John Blesslngton, took a day off in the woods recently. A cat dropped off a tree onto Blessington’s shoulder. The automatic service pistol of Patrolman Haffner barked once and the cat crumpled to the ground. It happened to be a wild cat. ——• —i — LONG RUN FOR BUSSES LOS ANGELES. Dec. 17.—Busses now run day and night on through schedules between Seattle and Los Angeles, skirting the Pacific Ocean for more than 1,000 miles. The seats are arranged so that pressing a button at night lets the backs down. Air cushions are used on most of the seats.
