Member Gorsras Memorial Institute (Written lor United Press) CHICAGO, Dec. 17.—Regard tumor for the present in its simplest, broadest meaning, namely a swelling. All tumors are not cancers. Each is a growth; tumor the genus; cancer the special kind of growth. Minor swellings of the skin, such as abscesses “pimples” of young people, boils, carbuncles, swollen glands, and other conditions, are infections from without, and due to germs gaining contact with the skin and being rubbed in by the clothing, especially the tight collar. In enlarged glands of the neck germs gain entrance through the nose and throat. They are harbored chiefly by diseased teeth, tonsils, and adenoids. Treat these pfoperly and glandular swelling subsides. Is Chronic If the germs are tubercular, abcess formation is tardy and tends to be . 'chronic but chronic does not mean simply slow. Local tuberis curable through medicine, Sunshine, X-ray, or other means. cines which do more harm than good. Knowledge is power. If one knows about diseased conditions and what to do about them, most of them are irobbed of their terror and countless lives are saved. This is true even in cancer, but time is the important element. Cancer is, at the start, a local disease which immediate and radical removal can permanently cure if not too far advanced. The cardinal point is, that any swelling in any port of the body, whatsoever, should be seen by the family physician and viewed from the surgical standpoint. YVowen Susceptible It is the wife and mother who is more subject to cancer than men. She hase more organa particularly liable to malignant growth especially the breast and the uterus. And a woman is more patient and willing to suffer In silence what man Is unwilling to bear. Moreover she is a victim of that psychology, so difficult to understand, which fears- to make known her condition lest It be pronounced cancer. Too often the absence of pain lulls to the belief that there can be nothing serious; whereas, this very absence of pain in an evident growth should arouse suspicion and drive her to the doctor. Every lump or swelling should receive Immediate medical attention. Apparent good health is no guarantee that cancer is not present. Any irregularity at*the “change of life” should be reported to the doctor. Especially if, after menstruation has ceased for several months, or a year or more, any discharge appears, whether of blood or a leucorrhoea, constult the doctor because this very often means cancer. He will apply the tests until suspicion of malignancy is allayed. Maxims Submit every swelling to the doctor at once. Fear neglect of cancer more

Dread of hospitals has given place to grateful appreciation. Never allow "change of life” to explain any ailment whatsoever. The female breast should be uniformly soft with no lump discoverable in it. Seek medical advice for any continued or recurring abdominal enlargement, tenderness or pain.'
