THREATENED U. S. STEP MAY FORCE , MEXICAN REVOLT Withdrawal of Recognition by Washington Would Prove Disturbing. Editor's Note: Mexico bids fair to be blsr news In American newspapers for some time to come. Washington threatens to break oft diplomatic relatione with her, and there is even talk of Interxention Here is the first of two stories from a staff correspondent, now in Mexico City, describing' the real situation there. By Max Stern Times Staff Correspondent MEXICO CITY, Dec. 15.—Withdrawal of recognition' of Mexico by the United States as threatened by the latest Kellog notes may mean a forced revolution, and such a revolution In Mexico today can result only in disorder and further chaos. This evidently, admitted everywhere In this troubled republic, is found on one fact. W'hile there is discontent that could he fanned into revolt with sufficiently well-financed agitators, there are no strong revolutionary leaders, backed by the masses and popular enough to make a revolutionary coup permanent. Only one man, acceptable to American investors, is able enough to take the reins should Calles let them Lfa.ll. He is General Obregon, pacifier, Phere of the army and factotum of the agricultural west coast. If foreign concessionaires could name a Mexican president it would be Obregon, and the masses would accept him. He is a big land owner, a "hustler” and Is "property minded.” Not one American investor, as I could find, looks with favor upon the ambitions of the exiled Adolfo de la Huerta, recognied as a discredited young turn-coat without honor even in his own land., Obregon Not Interested But Obregon prpfesses to prefer his present role of power behind the throne. lie has said he doesn’t want another presidential term and he Is generally believed. Moreover he and Calles are as strong personal friends as ever. Congress has kindly opened the way for Obregon’s re-election by a law permitting two presidential terms, providing they are not con-' secutive. But unless Calles wishes to retire Obregon’s partisans will have to wait till Calles’ term expires in two years before Obregon will consent, like Clnclnnatus, to

c 4 word to the WIVES—- ) I For every pipe-smoker on your list

\ u 1 THIS season, when you are being urged on every hand to "Give this” and "Give that,” be assured of this truth: Nothing you could give a pipe-smoker could make more of a hit than a generous supply of Prince Albert ... mild, mellow, fragrant Prince Albert. Here, for * stance, is the crystal-glass humidor, all dolled up in holiday clothes. It contains a full pound of P. A.—the grandest tobacco that ever lined the bowl of a pipe. There’s a little sponge in the top of the humidor to keep the tobacco "just right,’'-

leave his fat acres in Sonora for political leadership. In no sense is Obregon a revolutionary “white hope.” Plenty of others are mentioned for the presidency. Luis N. Merones, backed by 1,500,000 union laborites of the “C. R. O. M." is a possibility, but not a revolutionary one. He is as close to Calles as is Obregon. Gen. Amulfo Gomez, head of the army in Vera Cruz, and Gen. Francisco Serrana, ex-war minister and governor of the federal district, loom as possible successors to Calles, but neither Is of a calibre to hold the masses In loyal aqulescence for long. Numerous Mistakes Calles has -made many mistakes by reason of a stubborn simplicity of natuve. Particularly he has handled the religious question so as to make

powerful enemies of those who otherwise would and should lie his friends. The Catholic opposition, centered In Guadlaj&ra and Puebla chiefly Is, however, passive. With Obregon’s powerful rural backing and Merones’ bloc of laboristns he could finish his two years In peace but for one thing. This Is American Interference. Whether Calles can weather the petroleum crisis, the Catholic boycott, the hard times due to the drop In the sliver market and the waning of the peso depends absolutely upon American tolerance and cooperation. If he falls through another bloody coup it will be because America has Joined his enemies. And then the first peace president in seventeen years will be followed by heaven knows what.

Every pipe-smoker on your list would be tickled to death to find this goodlooking package among, his gifts on Christmas morning. It will brighten the Big Day for him and furnish deep-down pipe-joy for the days that follow. The Prince Albert humidor, by all means! This prime favorite of experienced smokers also comes in pound and halfpound tins. At the nearest shop, you will find Prince Albert in sizes to suit every purse and purpose. If he smokes a pipe, your Christmas problem is setded • • . and setded satisfactorily.
