LUMBER BUSINESS OF FIRM IS GOOD The lumber business has been fairly good this fall for the Ben Davis Lumber Company, according to J. A. Breedlove, secretary-treaa-urer. The outlook for the winter and coming spring is "normal,” he declared, based on contemplated building projects. ‘‘The weather conditions of the past month have, deterred to some extent building activities, but generally speaking the lumber business of this territory has been satisfactory," Breedlove said. "Mlllwork demands have been steady. We have supplied lumber for a number of homes recently. The farm market demands also have been fairly good. Farmers are doing some repair work and several contracts for farm buildings have been closed." The Ben Davis Lumber Company keeps a. good stock of lumber and mlllwork. as well as other tjpes of building material. It has sold a large amount of Rheetrock wallboard for various building purposes. The company also handles the MeHenry - Millhouse asphalt, shingles, a high-grade typo of shingle, which is becoming very popular with many builders, according to Breedlove. "Prices are holding steady on building materials and supplies are easily obtainable,’’ he said. SLIDING STAIRWAY IN MANY BOOSES The ingeniousness of the Presto sliding stairs in homes for utilizing half-story or attic space has attracted considerable attention and a large number of homes in Indianapolis are equipped with them, according to W. Earle Miller of the builders' hardware specialties department of Vonnegut Hardware Company, 120-124 E. Washington Rt. "Much half-story or attic space has been abandoned heretofore because, of the valuable space which would have been necessarily sacrificed for a built-in stationary stairway or the cutting up a good-sized room.” he said. "The Presto sliding stairs works like inaglc. It replaces the spacedevouring stationary Ptairway and provides quick and convenient access to the attic or upper floor. It is also often used as ventilator by leaving the celling opening partly open. "It is being inexpensively installed. And carpenter can put in the Presto stairway in a day’s time at the most, or in anew home prepare for it in a few hours. It is being used more and more to make livable rooms out of attics In houses and bungalows. "The stairs are lowered out of the attic by a light pull on a chain. Double spring barrels so nicely balance the weight of the stairs and assist in its lowering and raising that practically no effort is required.
