ABOLISHMENT OF POOR ROUSES IN COUNTjESSOUGHT Eagles Lodge in Favor of Pensions —Legislation Planned. h'usnlng- before the coming Legislature of a bill to abolish county poor houses, and substitute “a more humanitarian and economical way of handling the situation," probably a .pension system, is being considered by the old age pension commission of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Indiana, following a meeting here Saturday. Thirteen district chairmen, headed tby Otto P. Deluse, a national offlcitr of the organization, went on record as favoring immediate passing of such a law. Taking as their basis a survey by a committee appointed four years ago, the committee pointed out that it cost $36.38 a month per capita to care for the infirm wards of the various counties. Against this they place the maximum of $25 per month allowed under the bill which is proposed. States Adopt Pensions Several States have adopted old age pensions .according to Deluse, among them Nevada, Montana, Wisconsin and Alaska. In Pennsylvania the State Supreme Court declared the act invalid, because of constitutional inhibitions. The Governors of Washington and California vetoed the law when passed there. According to records to be presented for consideration of the State lawmaking body, 500 out of 3,300 infirm inmates of the various county institutions died in 1923. The average length of life in such Institutions is shown to be but three years. Sixty-one percent of those now in such institutions are more than 65 years old. Frank E. Heringr, South Bend, chairman of the national commission on old age pensions for the Eagles, was head of the commission,

Ho has opened his oyster house for the second season at the Ohio street address. With the advent of cold weather, the oyster appeals to many persons as a change from the spring and summer meats and foods and the oyster business picks up, he explained. “Because of the fine food qualities of the oysters,” Everingham de dared, “it has become highly prized by dieticians. The oyster contains more chemicals necessary to proper digestion and nutrition than almost any of the products offered for sale. It contains plenty of iodine, which enables persons to thwart goiters, and it contains other chemicals, which nature demands for the system. "We make a specialty of serving only shell oysters, because we can give the public the real, nutritive qualities of the oyster. When oysters are shipped in bulk they lose much of their real value as food, the rich natural juices being lost, absorbed or deterioriting after oysters fire removed from their shells and then shipped.”
