RADICAL BRINGS DISGRACE UPON NOTED FAMILY From Founder of Nation to Man Without Country. Bu Service PARIS, Dec. 10.—Three generations in the Garibaldi family—from founder of a nation to a man without a country? For Col. Ricciottl Garibaldi, grandson of Giuseppi, the liberator, of all men on earth today seems most completely a citizen of no man’s land. Cosmopolitan the Garibaldis have been, always. Ricciotti was an officer in the French army early in the great war. But the name has meant patriot, also. Since Ricciotti's recent arrest in connection with plots in France against both Spain and Italy, no nation will claim him. * He has been known as-a prominent anti-Fascist. Now his own faction repudiates him, even as do the Fascists. France considers him an undesirable alien, an agent provocateur, and moves toward his deportation. Belgium may permit him to enter, but she will go on farther than mere toleration of him. Even one of his brothers, Ezio Garibaldi, an ardent Fascist, wrote “KONJOLA ENDED MY RHEUMATISM; ALL PAINS GONE”

My trouble started with weak kidneys and became worse. For six years I have been practically an invalid, down in bed most of the time, and very seldom away from the house, unless some one—was along, for I never could trust my strength to hold me up. I used crutches constantly for over three years, and the many forms of misery I endured are hard to tell in words. But I will say that night after night I hobbled across the floor, suffering the worst agonies any human could. Most nights I never closed an eye. | My limbs were so painful they felt I like a sharp knife was being gouged ! into the muscles. Hard lumps, the size of a hen's egg, would raise on the calf of my legs. My family will tell you that I cried out in pain anfl many times I had to be rubbed and massaged for hours. I would rather have been paralyzed than keep on suffering the way I did. It seemed life relief was impossible. Liniments, electric treatments; and everything recommended was given a trial. Most times I couldn’t even get temporary relief. I am ,12 years old and I thought I was doomed to agony the rest of my life. “I had been down in bed three weeks, perfectly helpless, at the time my wife sent for your Konjola. When r had taken about half of the first bottle I felt a change, and a few nights later I slept peacefully for over seven hours. The pains were easing up, and so I kept right on taking Konjola. My limbs were getting stronger all the time and each night I was resting better. It seemed like a great blessing just to sleep. Pepplno Garibaldi, came over from his home in the United States to stand by him. Another, Sante Garibaldi, a building contractor in Paris, is equally zealous on his behalf. And in his prison cell he has three mice which he has triads his friends. He spends his time teaching them tricks. Ricciotti for three weeks has been the storm center of the greatest excitement France has known since the war itself. Mussolini’s friends claim that all the plots against his life have been hatched on French soil. The outburst came when the French police squelched two things: 1. A plot of Catalan Spaniards, headed by Col. Francesco Macia, to march a little army from France across the border and proclaim a separate Catalonia. 2. jy plot to send more agii tators into Italy. The French police discovered that a high Italian police official named Lapolla had come to Nice secretly and acted mysteriously. They bounced him across the border, but his papers connected him with Colonel Garibaldi. The latter has lived in Nice since war. He was taken from his villa to a police station where the authorities pitilessly pelted him with questions. Later they permitted so much to -seep out that French newspapers and Italian anti-Fascist papers in France charged that Garibaldi was a double-dyed traitor. They asserted that while posing as an anti-Fascist, he was in reality in the pay of the Fascist police, having drawn from them over 500,000 lire. more were trapped when they went into Italy. They charged that Garibaldi stirred up Italians to fight Fascism and at the same time encouraged Macia to make his attempt against Spain. The plot was to embroil France with Italy and Spain at the same time and throw the latter two Into each others arms, with France as the common enemy. Found Mysterious Passport -Here Is one of the unexplained things. Fernand Scivoli worked for Sante Garibaldi in Tparis. He maims Ricciotti asked him to go to Italy to deliver certain letters. But when the police pounced dowm on the baggage of the Fascist police officer they found Scivoli’s passport, together with his picture. The conclusion was that Sdivoli was to be seized ae a conspirator against Mussolini. Garibaldi, while making various admissions, portested his innocence. lie is distrusted now by both the Fascists and the anti-Fasclsts. Here is a kick he got from the Italian republican party which has taken refuge in France: “The papers publish that the agent provocateur Ricciotti Garibaldi had asked the Italian Republicans of Nice for letters to Republicans living in Italy. This is correct, for it Is precisely the Italian Republican party that it was desired to attack through ignoble plot. But It is also true that the party refused to give him letters for the reason that Garibaldi was suspected by us and closely watched for more than a year. Furthemore, he has been excluded from our ranks since 1923.” Candidates for marriage are nowstamped in Turkey. Each person applying must undergo a medical examination and the arm of the applicant is stamped with the number on the permit.
