State Parks Attract Many in Winter
■qik . 4MmiNMHKHr
Winter scene looking across Turkey Ron Hollow, Turkey Run State Park, where a dense growth of trees rises from the seventy-foot gorge.
Indiana's State parks soon will be seen In all their splendor of winter scenic beauty, according to Richard Lleber, conservation director, who points out that the parks are yearround Institutions. The State has six parks, two of them under construction. Turkey Run, In the north part of Parke County, offers the nature lover a tract of virgin wilderness at the Junction of Sugar creek and Turkey Run. Hotel accommodation are maintained throughout the winter season to accommodate the thousands of visitors. CUfty Falls, In Jefferson County, promises all the beauty of Icy splender—the pools, falls and creeks In the region becoming Ice encrusted early In the season and remaining frozen for days at various periods. McCormick's Creek Canyon, another State reserve, Is located in Owen County, and MusCatatuck State Park Is In Jennings County; both holding to the conservation department’s precedent maintaining the virgin woods. Indiana Dunes, in Porter County bordering a wild region on Lake Michigan and Lake James State Park In Steuben County, are the parks under construction. Hotels and summer cottages, owned, are being erected on these reservations. Natural Monuments "It Is the plan of the department,’’ Lleber said, "to keep the State parks as the largest natural monuments of Indiana. Their historical significance Is great, due to the fact that they are made places irt natural, virgin beauty and not places of amusement, other than that pleasure gained by over 300,000 people this year In viewing the native splendor." The department also maintains the famous James F. D. Lanier home at Madison for the inspection of visitors. The old mansion was restored and equipped with the same furnishings it had when the owner
left It in 1880. This historic place of Interest prmy be visited conveniently while at Cilfty Falls, which Is Just outside of Madison. "Maintenance of the State parks costs the taxpayer next to nothing,’’ Lleber s&ld, comparing Indiana’s parks with those of other States. "The Indiana appropriation was $50,000 for such usage, while New York State parks of Tndiama are mentioned In the same breath with those of New York State, whenever comparisons are mads, controlled and rented by the State, Visited by Students "While Illinois, and especially Chicago, have numerous parks, the dean of botany at Chicago University brings two classes each year to Turkey Run, In Indiana, for the purpose of studying the virgin botanical specimens the State maintains there. It Is a decided compliment of our home reserves.” Attendance during the winter at the parks keeps the housing accommodations filled to the limit, despite the extreme rainy seasons during the past winter and spring, the department’s records show. Rates run from $2.50 to- $3.26 a day. Half a dozen men are on duty in each park throughout the winter season. Visitors are usually careful of the fire dangers during the spring and fall, not requiring much increase In employees for those seasons. Between ten and twelve men handle the Influx of summer crowds. The special Thaksglving dinner at Turkey Run. which has been an annual event for years, will be held again this season. The accompanying outdoor festival will be an at-
