WHEN SELFISHNESS ENTERS, LOVE FLIES OUT THE WINDOW
JEven Married Folk Do Not Like to Furnish Alibis for Every 4) Move—Subtle Manifestations of Jealousy Wreck Happiness. By Martha Lee “When sefishness enters in at the window, love flies out at the door,” a famous eastern divine, Dr, Stephen Wise, paraphrased before an Indianapolis audience the other night. He was talking about marriage.
'"The only basis for a happy marriage is one of sympathy and reverance for each other's personalities,” he said. “Do not try to rule. When you rule, you impoverish the other. Love should liberate.” That's true,, because even married folks don’t like to furnish an alibi for every move. .No one enjoys being put through a questionnaire. Such subtle manifestations of jealousy not only curtail freedom, but too often gradually and deliberately kill all affection. "Love Bhould not rob. It should enrich,” Dr. Worth said further. “No couple is truly wedded unless they enrich each others best natures; unless they bring out in each Other, the noblest qualities of which each one is capable,” he concluded. Not much room for selfishness in such a union as Dr. Wise describes, la there? Engaged, but Doubtful Lee: I am a young woman old. I am engaged to be mar-

rled and usually I am very happy, but I hear so many references to unhappy marriages that sometimes I am afraid. We are very congenial, but do men always change afterward? What do you think? T , . . MISS MARY C. I think you will do well to not listen to “hard luck' stories of marriages. It is true of course, that there are loss of unhappy marriages these days, but It is equally true that there are thousands of happy ones. You do not hear so much of the latter, on the same principle that an out-of-repair auto makes a lot more noise in its travels than one in good condition. He's Stopped Calling Dear Martha Lee: As you have helped so many cither girls, perhaps you will be able to help me. I am 1(3 years old and go to high school. L met a nice young man and had dates with him for some time, but he does not come around any more. I like him so much. Pleaae tall me how to win him. Is It proper lor two girls to go to a boy s apartment? Do you think petting- Is sin? J. P. BROWN EYES. Evidently the young man was not as attracted to you as you were to him. There is no magic formula to bring an indifferent young man back. Perhaps you'll meet him again. If so, be very cordial and your acquaintance may deepen. It is certainly not proper for girls to go to a young man’s apartment. “Petting” may not exactly be a sin. but it is an unwise practice for young girls. Watch your step. A Vacation Needed Dear Martha Lee: As you have helped others. I frel that vou can help me also. I do not know what I am going to do about the fellow that I am going with. I met him atiout two years ago and have gone with him all the time, and he was always mighty nice. I.alely he has ehanged. He has gotten terribly snoonev It s now become a real problem. He gavs that If I reallv loved nlm, I would not object. but I do love him. only I cannot believe that that Is love. Please advise me. “PUZZLED.” Only you know what the conditions are, but If the situation has got out of your control, perhaps you had better quit going with him for awhile. There’s a possibility that if his preffered caresses are actually distasteful to you, he may not be your real Prince Charming. I believe a vacation from each other would be wise in your case. Christmas Present Dear Martha Lee: What would be nice aa a present for a young man that 1 have been going with for some time? ELLA R. All the stores now have lists in connection with their advertising which Include articles of wearing apparel, smoking sets. etc. You should have no difficulty In deciding if you will study these. Wants to Diet Dear Martha Lee: X am 17 year* old and would like to reduce so aa to lose about fifteen or twenty pounds. Pleaae advise me. MISS FRANCES K. I must tell you first that authorities consider it quite unwise for young girls to diet. As you didn't mention your present weight, I don’t know whether you are overweight or not, but if you’re feure, you must begin gradually and content yourself with a blow reduction. Leave sugar out of your tea or coffee (or reduce the amount). Discard bread, potatoes, almost all butter and cream, candy, Ice cream, etc. Don’t eat pork or fat meats or beans or salad dressings, don’t drink milk. What can you eat? Almost all vegetables, except those mentioned. Fruit, except bananas, vesd, lamb or lean beef In email quantities, are considered comparatively non fattening although there mustn’t be much quantity of anything. There are some freak diet regimes, such as pineapple and veal; milk one day and orange Juice the next, etc., but, truly, unless you are really heavy, don’t put your young system Into this strait-jacket of the dieting craze.

Faith did not faint, but It seemed to Bob that she was dying, as her strong body crumpled in his arms. It was the rector, the Rev. Mr. Ashhurn, who finally spoke. “What do you mean? What has happened? Speak up, man.” Bob’s tiorror-struck eyes never left Faith’s white face turned up to his. He spoke gently, soothingly, his love for her routing horror from his voice. “I would have given my life to have spared you this, dear heart. But —you had to know. Shall I tell you now? You’re not going to faint?” She swallowed twice, painfully, then whispered hoarsely. "I’ll be—all right. Tell me." "Mr. Ashbum, I think you had better make an announcement that the wedding will not take place. You can use your own Judgment as to how much you should tell, but I do not think it would be wise to tell that mob in there —” he motioned toward the auditorium of the church —"that Mr. Cluny is—dead. It would be better to dismiss them without explanation, see that they leave quickly and quietly. The police may be here any minute —” "This is terrible, terrible!” the rector made a few uncertain steps about the room, then, seeming to gather courage, turned toward the door leading into the vestryroom where the bridesmaids awaited the bride. "Where is Cherry?" "God knows! When I saw you here, dressed as you are. terrified, I thought she had fled to you. It would be like her. She has turned to you In trouble all of her life. Now, darling, let me tell you all I know. Uncle Ralph had asked me to call for him in my car at a quarter to nine, as he was sending the limousine for you and Cherry. The parlor maid, Mary Kearney, who has been with Uncle Ralph for two or three years, opened the door for me. She was looking sullen and angry, and I supposed it was because she had not oeen allowed to go to the wedding. "I went right upstairs to Uncle Ralph’s room, expecting to find him In the very last stages of dressing, or walking the floor in anticipation of my arrival. Instead—” he paused, gathered her hands tightly against his breast, "I found him — lying on the floor —blood matting his white hair —dead." Faith shrank back as if he had struck her. tugging to release her hands. “Cherry didn’t do it!” she cried out sharply. "She couldn’t. She never could beiy* to hurt people. She never fought'like other chil-

dren—” Her voice was rising hysterically. "Listen, Faith! You mustn’t go on like that! I’m not —accusing Cherry. But I have to te\l you the truth, all that I know of It. I’ll have to tell It all to the police In a few minutes anyway. Wouldn't yop rather hear it first, alone, like this?” "Tell me. I’ll be good,” she said humbly. “We’ll stand together through this, Faith. We’ll save Cherry. Ashburn or the police will be here any minute. Mary Kearney, the maid, says Cherry rang the front door beei at about 8:30. She hud on & brown coat suit and hat, and a coupe was waiting at the curb. In it. Mary taw a man, indistinctly, because the snow was falling, you know. Cherry pushed past the maid and ran upstairs to Uncle Ralph’s room, where he was dressing for the wedding." The sound of heavy footsteps Interrupted him. “It’s the police, darling. Be brave.” (To Be Continued) (Copyright.. 1920, NBA Service, Iftr.) NEXT: Terror and confusion reign at the chmch.

DON'T START ED UCA TION TOO EARLY Babies Made for Love and Kisses and Not. for Experiments. By Mr*. Walter Ferguson Now are coming the nursery schools. You may enter your child at 18 months —venerable age—and there is no telling what he will accomplish. These schools have already been started In several of the larger cities. Somebody with nothing much to do has worked out the Idea that the entire character of a youngster is formed at the age of 5, and that each action from the moment of birth has a direct bearing upon his education. Thus those Institutions of higher learning are planning to take the babies and teach them to crawl upstairs in an intellectual manner, to play wisely with their toys and to drink their milk like perfect little ladies. Younger and younger, we are beginning to educate them. They are starting to school almost an soon an they are born, and coming out lovely patterns of the same shape. Their tender minds are being trained according to somebody's pet theory. We have set ourselves up as a huge educational factory, and are Intent upon turning out model children, to act. believe and think alike, much as the auto factories turn out perfectly polished cars. Now there may be some women .who want educated babies. We are not one of them.’ We don’t care whether our baby at fifteen months is mentally competent to uncork a bottle (something he should naturally inherit from his father), which somebody has said is the perfect mental test for a child of that age. Babies were not intended to be used as experiments for theorists.

God made them to cuddle and kiss, to play and to laugh,*to be tended and cherished. He made them to be mothered before they were educated. The continued increase of schools for younger and younger children, while it may produce a few infant prodigies, is really a dangerous thing, for it takes the child away from the mother and foists its rearing upon the State. And the State has already got too many Jobs on hand, to be able to look after the babies who have intelligent parents to do it for them. And the State, no mater how rich, how capable, how thorough, has never yw been able to turn out so fine a man as one good, practical, understanding, loving mother can manufacture. STATE HAS BURIED TREASURE, PERHAPS Bold Pirates Once Plied Their Trade on Ohio River and Had Rendezvous in Perry County.
That Indiana has a buried pirate treasure Is almost inconceivable to Hoosiers. “Why I thought that all pirates were on ocean, like Captain Kidd," someone will say. Most of the noted ones were, but during the early part of the nineteenth century a band of these buccaneers operated on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. These river pirates sailed up and down the streams, preying upon the flatboßts that were used to convey marketable products of the Northwest territory to New Orleans, the most accessible seaport in that railroadless age. Dating Spaniard One of the most daring of these old men was Troxel, a Spaniard, who carried on his thieving occupation between the falls of the Ohio and its mouth. He not only seized luckless flatboats but also made raids on settlements along the Ohio. At numerous points along the river he had hiding places to which he and his men would retire when too by officers of the law. One of these was in the Pounds, near Shawneetown, 111. Another was In the northwest comer of erry County, Ind., conifected to the Ohio by a small stream, the Anderson River, over which Abraham Lincoln ran a ferry for some time. This rendevous in Perry County was more on the order of a fortress. It had a stone wall five feet high, built In the shape of a horseshoe, 112 feet in circumference. Part of the original structure still is standing and the shape and size of it still can be seen. Many Legends Many legends are told about this old fortress and of the happenings around it. Schoolboys pass it after night with trembling knees and quick beating heart, for Captain Troxel was supposed to have been killed there during hl9 last stand,

and tradition has it that he returns every night to guard the treasure he had hidden there. Numerous supposed clews as to where Troxel buried his ill-gotten wealth have been followed for days at a time with no results. Still history and tradition have it that he buried his gold there, and they may be right. Will someone accidentally find the treasure or will one of the numerous hunters discover It? That is something that only time can tell. BABY BLUE BACK A pink kasha sport dress is trimmed with bands of blue kasha in a shade that might be described almost as the old-fashioned baby blu*.
