4,272 AIDED BY RiLEYHOSPIIAL Medical Attention Is Given to Destitute Children. A total of 4,272 sick and crippled children of Indiana were admitted to the James Whitcomb Riley hospital of the Indiana University school of medicine here during the two years since its opening, Nov. 19, 1924 .according to the records of Robert E. Neff, administrator. Children admitted to the wards of the hospital numbered 2,516 and 1,756 were cared for in the daily clinics, where examinations are made and recommendations for care given. The patients admitted to the Riley hospital are committed by the judge of the circuit, criminal or juvenile court of the county in which the child lives. The State law provides that any child under 16 years of age may be so committed, if it appears to the satisfaction of the judge that the patient is suffering with a disease or deformity which migh tbe cured or improved by hospital care, and if the parent or legal guardian is not financially able to pay the expenses of such treatment. A State appropriation is made for the equipment needs of the Riley hospital and the medical and surgical service is provided free of charge by the staff of the Indiana University school of medicine.
