CLAIMS CHURCH HAS A NEW MORAL LEVELJF POWER Dr. M. P. Burns Reports on Present-Day Conditions in Methodist Church. “Ten years ago. the work of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the downtown congested and sinburdened sections of the cities was on the decline,” Dr. M. P. Burns, Philadelphia, Pa., superintendent of city work, told the annual meeting of the Board of Home Missions and Church Extension in session in New York. In this report Dr. Burns said: “The great downtown churches which in previous years had occupied pivots of moral prestige and power and were the real centers of spiritual dynamics of the denomination were on the retreat find dispossessed them af their spiritual strength and in many instances they were hopelessly awaiting the hour when the moral morgue would open its doors and receive them into eternal rest and committment. “Practically the same statement might be made with truth concerning the foreign-speaking and polyglot and the great purely industrial portions of the cities in large sections of the country. It might also be said with some degree of truth today that these conditions have been reserved. The downtown churches throughout Methodism have been restored to anew and higher level of moral and spiritual passion and power. “Today, however, in most of the

country, the real challenge and appeal. the real tragic and strategic call, the real obligation and opportunity compelling the church to its largest and most tremendous endeavor is the uncared for, unchristianized, newer residential and suburban sections of our cities. “Hands are stretched out to us on every side by these sections imploring the general church to come over into those sections and help build churches and shepherd and teach the people the way of God. "Upon the accomplishment of these tasks depends the ability of the church to map out and carry forward successfully a comprehensive missionary program covering the whole life of the community in which it stands. So much for generalization. "There are approximately 6,000 Japanese Christians in the Japanese Pacific Mission with headquarters in Bos Angeles. Buddhists are bending every effort to win and hold the great majority, their activities far exceeding anything seen in the Orient. Their chief rallying cry is the injustice, the materialism and the wickedness of America which they argue shows, the inferiority and failure of Christianity. Christian Truth “Their whole movement is essentially anti-American and tries to hold the Japanese for Japan. We have twenty-one organized Japanese Methodist churches In the chief Icenters with 1,700 members. California is becoming with great rapidity a state of immense national influence. The Christians of California face the problem of capturing a civilization for Christ, which in the rapidity of Its development outstrips all our projects and plans. “Methodism stands sturdily to the task of attempting -to pour the stream of redemptitve Christian truth into the life of this turbulent city. "California has never had a Sunday law, and the ‘easy money’ folks naturally prevent any legislation strengthening the moral forces of the State,’’ Dr. Burns states in his report.
