NAVY BROADCAST SHIN By FAR MOSTPOWERFUL Eighty Times Stronger Than Ordinary Radio Equipment. Bu \FI Service SAN IIIECIO. Cal., Nov. 2#.— Eighty times more powerful than tho ordinary broadcasting station transmitter; four times ns powerful as any other United States naval station— That’s the new Chessal Heights naval radio station vacuum tube transmitter just completed and installed here. On the Navy’s newest and most powerful transmitter messages can be sent to American warships anywliero in the world at night. Tho set has a range of 12,600 miles—enough to girdle the globe. Tho broadcaster is intended strictly for dots and dashes. The human voice cannot be heat'd over It In the absence of special apparatus. Codo messages may be sent over it at the rate of 100 words a minute. Compare this with commercial rates of about forty words. Tho Chellas Heights station, which sits in the shadow of a mountain, atop a hill, and overlooks the Pacific Ocean eleven miles distant, isi a remote control station. It is used for sending purposes only. It broadcasts automatically messages from a sending key on Pt. Loma, The messages fly from antenna strung on three masts, each 600 feet high, the three forming a triangle 1,100 feet on a side. Cross-arms at the top are sixty feet in length. Six transmitters make up the sending apparatus. The 80.000-watt tubes replace 200,000-watt arc transmitters. Trial Station “The significance of this new sot," says Lieut. Com. A. O. Thomas, communications officer for the eleventh naval district, “lies in the fact that, if it proves completely cuceessful, other naval radio stations will give up the arc for the tube. "Already we have noted that broadcast fans within tho vety shadows of the towers suffer no interference when tho stations runs full blast.” cantly -built by a large American company. One went to Japan. The third to South America. The 20,000-watt tube in this set is the largest yet made for practical use. The copper plate heats so rapidly water is used for cooling. Twen-ty-tw T o volts of electricity light the filaments. The plates take as high as 15,000 volts. Tho station cost $1,500,000; the new sending apparatus SBO,OOO. SCIENCE GIVES ECZEMA WIDER CLASSIFICATION Until Recently Disease Was Synonymous With Any Eruption. Bit Vvital Prcßi i CHICAGO, Nov. 26.—Probably no term is more familiar among affections of the skin than that of eczema. To many people it is almost synonymous with any eruption on the sWn and, until a few j’enrs ago, many physicians had the same idea. Hut not the term eczema has come to have a more limited meaning. In tho first place many diseases which hnve no*relation whatever to eczema have, upon superficial observation, a good many points in common with It. In this group are included certain types of tuberculosis of the skin, and skin rashes, which are the direct result of taking some particular drug or unsuitable typo of food. A second group still more closely resembling eczema are those Inflammations of the skin which are caused directly by some external Irritant. I refer to what tho skin specialist calls a dermatitis. The primrosq will cause this trouble to many people. This group is of much economic importance to employers, e i many men who work with acids, chemicals, and dyes develop an inflammation of this sort. A similar group is nlso found nmong women who develop a dor matitis of the face as a result of using certain hair dyes, creams and other cosmetics or by the wearing of furs which have been colored with certain dyes. A third group has gained much prominence recently nnd resembles eczema so closely that until the past few years it baffled even specialists In skin diseases. This is a type of ring-worm, though this condition is not a “worm” and usually not a “ring.” It is readily an inflammation of the skin caused by a fungus or mold and Is often contracted around bath houses, swimming pools or by close contact with affected individuals. It frequently starts between the toes or fingers, causing severe itrbing. Since the discovery of this fungus doctors now realize that many cases formerly called eczema were really due to this low form of vegetable life. This narrows the field down to the true eczemas. Science has much to learn yet regarding tho tee nature of this disease. Such a diagnosis is usually made by a process of elimination. In general the term eczema when properly used designates those more or less chronic or recurrent inflammations of the skin for which no ohvious external factors can be found; nnd which probably are du6 to some derangement of the chemistry of the body: such as absorbtlon from some focus of infection, poorly balanced glands of internal secretion. Treatment depends upon the findings in each individual case.
