WOMEN ARE NOT GOOD SPORTS IN THE GAME OF LOVE
Men Are Wiser—They Do Not Try to Fan Old Flames to r Blaze Again, Says Martha Lee —'How Can I Win Him Back,’ Is Feminine Plea. By Martha Lee Women have'shown that they can be successful in a great many masculine occupations and activities, but when it comes to matters of the heart, they indicate little progress.
They are not good sports In the game of love. They lose too hard. Men aro wiser. They rarely hold to the ashes of a dead love, expecting and Insisting that it brbaki into flame again. Women do, and the question, "How can I win him back?" is a most frequent, feminine one. Yet nothing Is a greater waste of time than raking the ashes of a burned-out romance. If the fuel that fed It in the first place could not hold the flame, where is the logic that would put flame and fire and interest into grap memories? He Ceased to Love Pear Martha Lee: Could you suggest now I could win back the lore of a man that I love dearer than I have words to tell you about? I went wtih him for about four years—not all the time, hut at intervals, and ho constantly grew dearer to me. hut I found that ho was getting tired of mo. He began to call less and less frequently and finally began breaking engagements. Tin always had excuses and for a time I did uot realize, but at last I did and told him I did not believe' he loved me. Finally he admitted it and has quit coming at all. I am broken hearted, of nothing else but him and would Bit be satisfied until I win him back, ■pass advise mo. HEART BREAK. Too bad you put four years into adoring this man. I sympathasize with you, hut really think your only course is to get busy with other interests and replace him in your thoughts. If he and you had had a misunderstanding and had parted in sudden anger, I would say, you might have hopes, but this kind of slow-dying emotion is usually about the deadest thing there It. Right now you feel perhaps that
MEN JURORS NO REASON TO BOAST Women Should Not Be Barred From Trying Murder Cases. By Mrs. Walter Ferguson A well-known criminal lawyer sagely remarks that women should never serve on juries in murder cases beca.use they are prone to be too merciful to men and too hard upon other women. To those advocates of psychology who delight to probe for inhibitions and the hidden meaning of human emotions, the reason for this should •t be hard to find. woman has been taught to look critically upon the loss of virtue in a sister, largely because throughout the years man has pounded this idea into her with a gat. Nobody imagines, I supjtose, that women themselves ever started the pleasant little custom of killing a wife when her infidelity was proved, for in those bygone days women started nothing. They had no more chance to express an idea or put it across than the modern house cat has of making out the income tax. Where the sins of sex are concerned, who has been paying since the world began? And who has been forgiven unto seventy times seven? It will taake many a year of education to overcome this unconscious inbred, unjust ideal in feminine minds. On the other hand, does any man contend that men make very intelligent or fair jurors when a pretty woman sits as prisoner before the bar? Is not one of those extremes as bad as the other when we consider that in the courts it is justice for the innocent and punishment for the guilty we seek? It argues no greater lack of poise or mentality for a woman to bring bouquets of flowers to a man on trial for his life than for twelve good men and true, in the fact of the clearest condemning evidence, to free a woman from a murder charge because she sheds a tear or two and ogles them while doing so. When It comes to getting clear thinking and brains on the jury bench, it is hard to see just where the men have any boasting to do. SENIOR WINNER Talies First Prize in High School Editorial Contest. John Rosebaum, Technical High School senior, was the recipient soday of the sls first prize for the best editorial appearing in a high school paper during the week of Nov. 1. Second prize of $lO went to Theodore Shockney of Union City. Rosebaum’s editorial, entitled "Slang,” treated of the prevalent misuse of English. Shockney’s editorial discussed the need of better mathematical training. Honorably mentioned were Joseph Kenny'of Peru, John Lewellyn of Gaston and Vincent Fowler of Technical, Indianapolis. The contest was sponsored by the Indiana High School Press Association. VOICE IS EVERYTHING Appearance is not necessary for a radio actor as Ten Eyck Clay recently discovered. Clay, player for WGY, Schenectady, N. Y.,\broke his wrist but he was able, in radio plays, to make passionate love and perform courageous feats of strength in spite of his injury. you can never quit grieving, but many persons would tell you that the sting of unrequited love can be overcome. There are a lot of men In the world my dear and a world of Interesting things to think about. Don’t he so foolish as to put time In on grieving over a man who has ceased to care for you. Won Her Ideal Dear Martha Dec: X have been reading- advice to tho lovelorn and want to write a few words about it. I got my ideal and so did my brother. I dicl it this way: I fell for a fellow at a picnic In June, but I acted a# If I were not paying any attention to him. I continued to act this way. He saw me at shows and dances quite often, but I didn't see him until a week ago Saturday at a dance: Ho asked me to dance. That started It. and now he comes to my house every night, and. I'm the happiest girl. HELENE. Here, girls, Helene has given you some valuable Information. She believes that apparent indifference attracted her "ideal" to her. Sometimes this works like a charm. Usually, It’s tho man who has had too much feminine admiration who responds to this kind of treatment. It’s a novelty to him and rouses him Into interest. Wants to Know Her Pear Martha Lee: I am 18 and In lore with a high school girl. I see her almost every dav. but I’ve never mot her. I learned that she was Interested In mo and as there seemed no way to make her acquaintance I attempted to “break the Ice” by calling her on the 'phone. I ask eel her for a date and she respectfully deelnted, As I should so much like to know her, should I try calling her up again, or shall I give up hone of knowing her? FILLMORE. “Give up?" A young man should have no such a word in his vocabulary. But do not call her again on the ’phone. She evidently wants a formal Introduction and Indicates by that that she is a girl whose acquaintance will be worth while. Use your Ingenuity. There Is some way. someone through whom to get an Introduction to her. As you know where she goes to school, you can surely find a mutual acquaintance, to help you out.

It was on Saturday, Nov. 13, that Madame Denise put the finishing touches on tho last frock In Cherry's truly marvelous wardrobe, took one last prideful look at the most enchanting trousseau she had ever designed, once more adjusted the deep, mechanical waves of her hennaed hair before the old pier glass, gathered up the paraphernalia of her trade —or her art, as she called it — and with dim, shabby little old Mrs, Hogan following meekly, took her departure—and a check for $1,6C0, signed by Ralph Cluny, Cherry'B aged fiance. “She stayed two weeks longer than we had bargained for," Cherry explained to Faith. "The original price was SI,OOO, but Ralph said I was to keep her just as long as I liked, and really, darling, you’ve got to admit that I’ve accumulated the most marvelous trousseau any girl ever had." While Faith, tired from her strenuous day of Saturday baking and cleaning, was setting the table for supper, she heard Cherry’s high, happy voice at the telephone. "Absolutely gorgeous. I'm dying for you to see everything. Selma’s coming over, Fran, and bring her bridesmaid dress, and I want you to come and bring yours. Faith’s is ready, too—yeah, a perfect dream! I almost got Jealous the way Madame Denise simply slaved over it, as If Faith’s dress was more important than my wedding dress. No, don’t let Bill come. This is going to he a chicken party. Maybe we’ll all dress up In some of my delirious new pajamas. Oh, my dear You’ll be surprised!—Oh, naughty! He won’t either! He’s too old! —He Is sweet, isn’t he? All right, 8 o’clock, sure. Bye!” She waltzed into the dining room and flung her arms about Faith, In an ecstasy of vanity and anticipation. "We’ll all dress up, and give Dad and Muggy, and Joy and Junior, tho kick of their lives! Oh, Faith! I'm sinfully proud of my trousseau! Don’t you think we ought to have a policeman to guard the house nights? Ralph’s really afraid someone will try to steal It, Blnce that

long write-up In the paper, with sketches and prices hinted at and everything.” Faith only smiled, and went on to the kitchen, closely- followed by the excited, glowing girl. Junior catapulted himself violently through the kitchen door, shedding a sheepskin coat as he did so. "Hello,” he grinned.' "Oh, boy! Eats! Say, Faith, you said I could bring Fay Allen over some time, and I’ve asked her for this evening. You said at breakfast you'd be home this evening. Be nice to her, sis—” Cherry beat with small, clenched fists on his broad chest. "JUst when I’ve got Frances Warren and Selma Pruitt coming ever to see my trousseau and try on their bridesmaid dresses. You can Just simply phone her and tell her It’s not convenient today, that’s all. Long Lane! Fay Allen!” "Long” thrust hfs sleek dark head down and forward so that his face almost touched hers. Round spots of color glowed on the tan of his high cheek bones. "Not on your life!” he snarled at her. “You ain’t the only chicken on the roost, even if you are makln’ a fool o' yourself, marrying that old monkey-gland! Fay’s cornin’, see, and you can like It or lump It, I don’t care! And you’re goin’ to be decent to her, see, or I’ll tell where I saw you last night. Get me? I guess you do, all right, all right!” "Squealer!” Cherry flung over her shoulder as she ran Into the dining room. "Oh, dad! Your best girl, Selma Pruitt, Is coming over tonight! Shave off you- funny old fvhtskers and dress up. won’t you, honey? I’m going to show Frances and Selma my trousseau, and all of us are going to put on the dresses we’re going to wear In the wedding. Fay Allen is coming over tonight, too. Won’t that be nice?” * "When do we put the feed bags on, Faith?” “Long” drew a chair scraplngly to the table and began to tap out a Jazz tune with hts fork and plate. "Hurray! Weinnies and sauer-
kraut! Attagirl! ’At’s the kangaroo’s camisole!’ ” "Well.” Mr. Lane, going to the table, "ain’t your Ma cornin’ to supper?" “She'll be In in a minute," Faith suid. “What are you looking so pleased about, Dad? You look like the cat that swallowed the canary." “New job o’ work," Mr. Lane acknowledged with a gruffness that did not hidq his pleasure. “Oh, hello, Martha. Feelin’ hotter today, honey?” “I been nearly dead with r sick headache all day,” Mrs. Lane advanced slowly Into the room, her
