Nov. 13.—Amateur radio operators and their equipment have developed during the last year into one of the chief factors of national preparedness and defense, according to the annual report of Maj. Gen. C. McK. Saltzman, chief Signal officer of the Army. "There has been opened up anew end vast network of radio channels of communication which will be of great potential value in time of emergency,” Saltzman declared. The Army is perfecting plans in cooperation with the American Radio Relay League for full utilization of these resources when needed. Reporting on the advances in this Science, in which the Army has lead, Saltzman said: “The advance in the art of communication has been most rapid during recent years. The past year has been no exception, as exemplified by ihe development of a short wave, high frequency transmission a.nd reception in radio, the use of carrier currents on wire lines, and so on through a long list of achievements.
