MARIE RECEIVES TRIBUTE OF CITY (Continued From Page 1) Marie, the woman, the wife and the •mother. When Hilton U. Brywn. city host aiid escort of the Queen, presented Her Majesty with a memento of her visit, at the banquet at the Columbia Club, which marked the close of the cdebratlon here, he told of Marie, the woman, her splendid record in the World War and her works of mercy. “We are glad and anxious to show our respect to you." lie declared, "Not only because-'of your royal blood, but because you are a woman to whom any city can be proud to pay tribute.” In reply to this speech, the Queer told of her love for America and her fine reception here, choking a bit as she told her listeners, who included the dinner guests and radio I audience, that it was with deep regret that she will have to return to her country before visiting nil the places planned. . "But there is such a thing as duty,” she stated. visit has been out short and j she will return home shortly bej cause of the illness of her husband, King Ferdinand. Arrives at 5:45 The royal Roumanian special, in which the Queen is touring America, arrived at Union Station at 5:45 p. m. Wednesday and left at about 1 this morning for Louisville, Ky. Long before tlie hour of arrival, the station was crowded and every effort jof police was needed to handle the milling throng. Soldiers of the Eleventh Infantry, Ft. Benjamin Harrison, were on hand and with fixed bayonets formed an aisle through which the royal party marched to tlie waiting automobiles, Prince Nicolas and Princess Tleana were not in Hie party, having j made the trip from , Chicago by motor. . r . | When the train arrived, a welcome committee, consisting of Brown. Adjt. Hen. William H. Kershner, Alec J. i Lupear and Wallace Lee, boarded • the royal coach and greeted the royal visitor. When the Queen alighted she was 'gorgeously clad in a cloth-of-gold coat, golden turban and slippers, and smiling a queenly smile that made the anxious throngs feel that here indeed was a queen who measured up to the tales In story books. A note of the picturesque was added to the welcome at the station by Roumanian women in native costumes. These the Queen greeted in the language of their native country, and/they bowed and kissed Her hand as dictated by their traditions. Procession Starts After running the gantlet of sabers and eyes of thousands of expectant onlookers, the Queen was placed in a machine and the procession got under way. The 11th Infantry Band played the Roumanion anthem and police and soldiers formed the guard for the royal party. The automobile parade went directly to (lie Monument, where the Queen, eSPfirted by Brown, presented a wreath of white and mauve chrysanthemums to Col. Oran Perry, the superintendent, to honor the soldier and sailor dead. , Thousands crowded the Circle and surrounding streets to witness this event;. the most striking ceremonial of4he evening. \ The great monument was bathed in floodlights and a spotlight played up and down the huge column. The presentation took place on the south steps nnd here sailors in white uniforms, soldiers, Marines and Boy Scouts formed the guard of honor. Standing at rigid attention, the I white suits of the Jackies looming j out in the semi-darkness formed a j dramatic setting for the first public ! act of a Queen in this city. Five Rgumanlan-Americnn Bov Scouts, members of Troop 53 of this city, formed a special bodyguard at the Monument. William Fortune, son of Russell Fortune, in Boy Scout uniform, , presented the Queen n wreath of chrysanthemums, following the receiving of the Queen’s wreath by ’Colonel Perry. One of the Scouts received a kiss from the Queen. A signal was given by another Boy Scolit and the chimes of Christ Church peeled forth, while the Queen stood on the steps and gave that individual hand-wave of greet# I ing. \ To the Library Again the procession was resumed, going up N. Meridian St. to the Central library, on the steps of which Mayor Duvall presented the golden key to the city. Here also thousands were on hand to witness the event. In receiving it and reviewing the great war days, talked of in the presentation speech, the Queen’s throat became filled and she told of her sorrow at having her visit to America, end sooner than she expected. "I do hope and believe that thu great war made a link between us and you people here In America nnd that yon will come to us nnd aid us by kindness,” she said.
