The advantages of a baked dinner are not the only incentives to geese hunters in this neighborhood. Recently gold nuggests were found in the crops and gizzards of several honkers. Officials of the Biological Survey say the birds probably picked up the gold with food on the beaches of the Bering Sea and along the Siberian coast. UNCLE SAM KIEKS ON OWN MEDICINE Protests Chinese Increase in Tariff Rates. Times Washington Bureau, 1. 122 Kew York Avenue WASHINGTON. Nov. 17.—Somehow or other. Uncle Sam, with a revenue-producing tariff wall thrown around his own. country, can't see the same thing for China. The State Department has registered a complaint through Consul General Douglas A Jenkins, ton, China, against the proposed plan of the Cantonese government to inspect all foreign ships entering the port to see if they are carrying imports liable for duty. “It Is a violation of foreign treaty rights for the Chinese to search foreign vessels In Chinese waters, they are exempt from examination,” the State Department thunders at the bewildered Chinese. The United States also protested against an import tax of two and one-half cent on ordinary shipments and five per cent on luxuries, which the Cantonese government put Into effect last month. But the protest went unheeded and the duty is being collected, for the Chinese, by the American and British managed customs service. Today, ships entering the port of Canton are inspected by the foreigncontrolled customs office, but the Chinese want to look over the cargoes themselves —not that they suspect anything, but they fear, perhaps, the American and British inspectors might pass by a dutiable cargo or two.
