HALL-MILLS DEATH LANE DESCRIBED (Continued From Page 1) . you were in De Russey’s lane the night of the murder?” ‘‘Staub.talkod to me but I didn't remember it.” Erlinger did not want to tell the girl's name because — "Well, she’s married and has t.wo children. And besides she has a hußband.” He said he and the girl drove to the lane about 10 p. m., sat in the auto for a while and then walked down the lane. "What did you walk down the lane for?” asked McCarter. Tired of Sitting “Got tired of sitting in the car.” “What did you do while in the car and how long were you in it before the walk?” "Oh, we talked for about an hour.” “What did you talk about?” Erling could not recall. Erllng remained in the lane until 11 p. m. that night, he said, and then took his companion to her home in New Brunswick. “Did you hear a noisy, rickety wagon go by you?” "No.” Mrs. Gibson has said that on the night of the murder she haefx followed, on her mule, a creaky wagon. Erling said that before he left the lane he had seen two other cars, one a limousine. These had passed him at about 10:30, he estimated. Stopped Near His Car “Mrs. Gibson stopped her inule on the left hand side of my car, which was parked at the side of the narrow lane,” Erling said, going into more detail about the presence of tbe State’s chief witness in De Russey’s lane the night of the murder. "She just paused. I saw the mule and Mrs. Gibson's face. I didn't speak to her and Jhe didn’t speak to me.” The cars Erling saw, had been parked. He said he suddenly saw their lights go on and heard the engines start. A sedan and a limousine then sped down the lane to Hamilton Ave., Erling went on. "How long after the murder occurred did you tell any one of your experience that night?” inquired the defense attorney. “It might have been two years,” admitted Erling. Later, however, Erling said he had told his mother on the day after the bodies were found. "Why did you first testify differently?” asked Mcarter. “It passed my mind,” he said. On re-direct examination Simpson devoted attention to the motor car Erling said he had seen in the lane. A Ford Sedan The first car to leave, he said, was a small sedan which looked like a Ford. “How many people were in the oar?” “Just one man.” "Could you Identify him if you saw him aain?” “No. I think not. But he had a mustache." Erling then said that the cars had been parked about 200 feet from the crabapple tree under which the' bodies were found. He said he was 2,000 feet down on the lane from where the cars were parked and had no idea the cars were parked there until the lights were turned on. “You have heard that Mrs. Hnll

has a Dodge Sedan?” asked McCarter. “Yes, said Erling. Russell Gildersleeve, a lay reader in Dr. Hill’s church, testified he saw the pastor and Mrs. Mills in New York together in the summer of 1921. Sunday, Mrs. Gibson was removed from the Hudson County Hospital by Simpson over protest of the house physician, A. A. Lawton. After an encounter with Dr. lawton, in which Simpson brushed aside his protests, Mrs. Gibson was placed in the ambulance and taken to the Jersey City Hospital, in Simpson's home town. Her temperature was 103. She signed a release, absolving the Somerset County Hospital of blame if her removal resulted unfavorably. Four specialists examined Mrs. Gibson today and said it would be two weeks before she could testify. They said she was suffering from cancer, heart trouble, kidney infection and a general dun-down condition.
ffl ARE DEAD IN PHILIPPINES (Continued From Page 1) hausted after forty-eight hoqrs of rescue work, building temporary shelters and burying the dea<f “We found Maj. Burton Reed of the governor general's staff busily checking the dead and he hod already tabulated 140 bodies in this small place alone. He said reports indicated sixty-five others still were missing. Deaths by Drowning “A peculiar thing about this catastrophe is that few persons were injured. All the deaths so far checked were caused ly drowning. “Batangas Bay Is almost surrounded by mountains, rising abruptly. When the typhoon started, about 10 p. m., the tide was running against the wind, but later changed with the wind, causing the water to pile up in mountainous waves which swept through ond engulfed the lower sections of the town. The water rose rapidly, but not with the speed of a tidal wave. "Wholly unprepared for the shock, the people weer caught like rate in the hold of a -wrecked ship. “The storm gathered strength and broke with intense fury at midnight, shredding houses and carrying many of them and their occupants out to sea. Streets Impassable “In the beach section all houses and occupants disappeared. It was our purpose to make a quick survey and return with information necessary for the government in its relief work. We walked through streets almost impassable with debris. "Major Reed already had the populace organized and the work which the people did through the night had brought exhaustion. Municipal authorities and provincial officials worked heroically. "Occasionally heartbreaking scenes were encountered. One man attempted suicide because his wife and five children had perished. Similarly, a woman who lost her husband tried to end her life. Mothers searching for children a-mid the jumble of ruins presented a sight the man could scarcely weather. Hundreds Escape "Hundretds of narrow escapes were reported. "Nothing has been heard from many of the Isolated towns along the coast and their reports may swell the death list.” After leaving the village. Major Hitchens flew over Lake Taal, which is in the crater of the Volcano Taal, which erupted in 1912 killing 1,200 persons. “We alighted on Lake Tall nnd visited the town in the vicinity along the water’s edge,” Hitchens continued. “The same desolation and destruction were everywhere. About half the houses through Lagoon of Batangas Province were destroyed." Hitchens’ report covers only those sections that could be reached by plane. Officials will attempt to penetrate other areas known to have been In the path of the storm.
DELEGATION NOT BACK OF WRIGHT Fervent oratory will be required to obtain ununlmous agreement of the Marion County delegation in the Legislature to support the candidacy of Frank E. Wright for speaker of the House of Representatives, it became known today. At least two of the local House members are definitely opposed to Wright’s candidacy and have said they will go the limit to prevent his selection. Wright, author if the “bone-dry” law, is deemed to date the most formidable opponent of Harry G. Leslie, Lafayette, speaker of the 1925 House. Only five members of the Marion County delegation responded to a call for a caucus at the Columbia Club Saturday. However, Representative J. W. Ebaugh, who announced the gathering, contended it was only to perfect arrangements for the customary hanquet of successful G. O. P. candidates.
