FAMOUS PAINTINGS ON AUCTION BLOCK 'Expects to Get 2 Million for Ten Pictures. Bu United Press LONDON, Oct. ,27. —At least $2,000,000 Is expected soon to bejpald for only ten pictures. TheVe are among the 200 masterpieces on canvas to go under the auctioneer's hammer late In November, when the private collection of Lord Michelham Is to be sold. The money likely to be paid for the entire collection has not even been calculated. The gallery has been a very neat Investment for Lord Michelham. Almost all the canvasses have Increased enormously in value while they hung in his rooms. The advance over the prices received by the artists for making the pictures is fantastic. One of Lord Michelham’s Raeburn canvasses is probably to fetch at least $150,000 when the bidding begins. Raeburn is reported to havo been paid about S4OO for making the portrait. There are also two of Gainsborough's works. It is doubted whether Gainsborough got much more than S2OO for making them. An earlier owner of one bought it in for S2OO. Later, it fetched $50,000 at an auction. Lord Michelham will probably get considerably more than that for it in November. , He has four Romney works in his (gallery, two of which at least are expected to be as eagerly bid for as that other Romney masterpiece which fetched $304,500 at Christie’s in July. Dozens of American millionaires are to be represented at this sale, which will make artistic history for years to come. PEKING SHOPS CLOSE Taxes Boosted to Maintain Military Operations on Large Scale. Bu United Press PEKING, Oct. 27.—1n order that Peking may continue to enjoy the operation of military law and militaristic exaction, residents of the capital are being asked to contribute an extra 10 per cent tax on monthly receipts ‘‘for maintenance of the Shantung-Chlhli Allied Army Corps.” So great have the various burdens on shopkeepers grown that already there is a partial close-up and boycott in effect. Most grades of imported wipes and liquors are now unobtainable outside the foreign controlled Legation Quarter because of new special taxes. Telephone, and other rates are being raided. An increasing number of business establishments show only barred windows, due to the numerous taxes and issues of worthless military banknotes. Authorities have, however, redeemed and burned some of the notes.
