$45,000 000 FOR UTILITIES DEAL MUCH DISCUSSED Need for So Large Amount in Heat and Light Merger Not Clear. Just why it would be necessary to float a $46,000,000 securities issue to consummate the proposed consolidation of the Merchants Heat and Light Company and the Indianapolis Light and Heat company was a source of inuch conjecture today In local util-' ities circles. Study of the taxation assessments ' of the two companies, as recorded With the State tax board, showed that their present total valuation is considerably less than half •of the securities issue which, it is authoritatively reported, will be asked of the public sendee commission. Present valuation of the Merchants Heat and Light Company, now controlled by Insull interests, is $8,200,000, records at the tax board snbw. The $10,319,9G5 assessment ofL the Indianapolis Light and Heat Company, fixed early this year by the board, would bring the combined valuation of the two to $18,520,885. • Tax Figures Supported ii These figures are supported to an extent by statements of the two companies filed early this year with the public service commission. The Merchants Heat and Light Company, in the latter report, claims assets and liabilities of $15,747,814.21 and a plant account of $12,770,690.85. The /Indianapolis company, a locally controlled cencern, declared assets and liabilities of $11,883,226.96 and a plant account of $10,898,400.60. The difference in each case between total assets and the respective plant account comprises accounts receivable, prepaid accounts, deferred debit items and similar assets. The larger figure in each case, however, does not include going value and good will. The true sale value of the Merchants company, which la due to be sold to the independent concern, might run as high as $20,000,000 when these , other elements were considered, it was stated today by persons versed in utility matters. Reported $30,000,000 Value Nearly a year ago, when Insull interests were negotiating to purchase the Indianapolis Light and Heat Company, it was rumored on good authority that the Chicago utility magnate had appraised the company at $30,000,000. This deal w r as blocked with transfer of the majority of the Indianapolis company stock to a holding company, thereby defeating a piecemeal purchase of the scattered stock. Intimation that the deal, being negotiated in New York, is nearing consummation were in the air today. John K. Ruckelshaus, attorney for officials of the Indianapolis Light and Heat Company, conferred again with the public commission Wednesday afternoon, disclosing further details. The commission, it was announced, will conduct a thorough inventory of both properties before passing on a securities issue. From the inventory an appraisal will be formulated. Just how soon the merger petition will be filed with the commission could not be learned. ( life" convict paroled Governor Permits Mancie Slayer to Attend Sister’s Funeral.
