B.v Major Hoople YANKEE STADIUM, NEW YORK, Oct. II. —Egad, folks, at the conclusion of Sunday's game, a special messenger, was ushered to my seat in the press box, with instructions that I should proceed immediately to a waiting limousine outside the stadium. The call was from James Walker, the honorable mayor of Xew York. It seems an embarrassment of etiquette toward visiting royalty has the civic heads of New York in confusion. Queen Marie of Rumania, bless her, is scheduled to arrive in New York very shortly, and while New 'York has been the host for visiting princess, a queen commands the most exacting of etiquette, tact, and diplomacy. Naturally I was the man for the occasion. While this has notihng to do with baseball, neither has my two volumes of Eskimo folk lore, which will go on sale in the book stalls for the Christmas trade. Miller Huggins, the Yankee manager, also was feverish for a conference with me pertaining to the winning of Sunday’s game and the championship. I suggested that he arrange a speedy transaction to obtain Alexander the Great, keep the bases filled and let Ruth bat three times an inning, egad. Sorry, folks, but I was four innings late for the contest. An obstinate conductor on the New York tram cars to the stadium insisted that a transfer I had given him was of a questionable date. So I walked the first four innings. I learned later that Babe Ruth had to walk four innings. The game was delayed five minutes pending my arrival. I learned that Babe had hit a home rqn and in the fourth inning that Meusel had dropped a $50,000 fly sent out by O'Farrelk ant} when the smoke had cleared the Cardinals scored three runs. This all happened when I was not there, so I guess I will have to let it go as official. In the fifth inning Ruth was walked for the second time. I feel Haines, the Cardinal hurler, should have walked the Babe in the third inning when he hit the homer. So does Haines. The last of the seventh the Yank fans stood up to try aim stretch in a few runs. With two out and the bases filled, the entire Cardinal team held a convention in the pitcher's box, and Al-

Tiv Vnitcd Press CHICAGO, Oct. 11.—With the smoke of “practice” games clearing away mid western teams today dug their toes into the soil to prepare for the real battles of the year, which open next Saturday. Three important fiitersectional fights are on the schedule. The University of Chicago’s singing Maroon|| go to the Philadelphia nial to meet the hard smashing University of Pennsylvania eleven. Chicago is weaker this season than she has been in several years past, but has anew passing game which may manage to make a showing against the Lou Young clan. Penn State College comes to South Ben# to play the Notre Dame team, which has piled up nearly 100 points in its first two games. Notre Dame beat Minnesota, a strong conference contender, 20 to 7, Saturday, but lost the services of two sterling players. Boland, a tackle, and Collins, full back. X. I). Players Out . Boland's right leg was broken in a collision with one of his own players, and he will be out for the season. Collins suffered a broken jaw when he crashed into a Minnesota end's head. In the first two games Notre Dame looked stronger than last year, and is favored to beat the Easterners. Ohio State <;oes to New York City to seek vengeance for the defeat suffered at Columbia’s hands last year. The Scarlet and Gray has been confident of a good season, and hopes to break away to a good start by taking the Blue and White for a ride. Eby, a newcomer, and Capt. Marty Karow and Elmer Marek are the three men depended upon to show what Ohio can do this season. Gophers at Michigan At Ann Arbor Michigan entertains Minnesota in the first game of the double-header schedule*! by the two teams. When no other Conference school would take on the GophersJM Coach Yost threw Northwestern his schedule and booked a game with Coach Spears' team. The second fracas will be played Nov. 20 at Minneapolis. Minnesota's team, despite the defeat at Notre Dame’s hands, Is rated one of the four touj?h ones In the conference. In playing Michigan the week after Notre Dame she is taking on an assignment few coaches would relish, but the impression prevails that if Michigan is to win the Big Ten Title she's going to have a real mess with Minnesota before she does it. lowa journeys to Illinois, where Coach Bob Zuppke's team has been installed as a favorite. Wisconsin plays Purdue at Lafayette. It will be a real battle. Northwestern looks to have the edge over Indiana at Evanston.
