MOVIE VERSION OF STAGE HIT DUE AT THE COLONIAL
Raymond Griffith Featured in‘You’d Be Surprised’at the Apollo—‘Subway Sadie’ Is Due at the Circle Theater Sunday Afternoon. Jean Hersholt is offered in his first starring vehicle, the screen version of Don Marquis’ stage play, “The Old Soak,” at the Colonial all next wfeek. The stage presentation of the three unit show will be a minature musical comedy offering by the Serveny Twins and their Jazz Pirates, the two dancers being assisted by a chorus of girls and three men principals. ,
Floyd Thompson and his singing orchestra will be heard In two specialty numbers, one featuring Bob Jones In “Oh, Boy! How It Was Raining,” and in addition the organization has arranged a musical setting for the picture. Director Edward Sloman, who gave to the screen the character picture, “His People,” is responsible for “The Old Soak,” and he selected George Lewis, who made such a hit in that picture, to assist Hersholt. Others in the cast are June Marlowe, William V. Mong, Louise Fazenda, Gertrude Astor, Lucy Beaumont, George Siegmann, Tom Ricketts and Arnold Gregg. The story is full of forceful heart interest drama with a strong sprinkling of comedy. It is not a drinking picture photoplay fans might judge from the name and being unacquainted with the remarkable stage offering, but it is a loving picture of a grand old Dad who goes to the front for his son, who has deceived him and assumes responsibility for a theft of bonds they are trying to fix on the boy. The son played the stage door of a musical comedy show and became enamored of the leading woman, who returned his love and aided the old man in saving the boy when she learned of his troubles. There are a number of brilliant dancing numbers in the colorful scenes of back stage life. The supplemental screen features include an Arthur Lake comedy, “Tiddle-de-Winks,” an Aesop fable, “The Phoney Express” and the current International News. -I- -I- -IMYSTERY COMEDY DUE AT THE APOLLO In “You’d Be Surprised,” the mystery comedy comes to the screen and along with it is Raymond Griffith, the high hat comedian, in a role that

is vastly different from anything he has done heretofore. He plays the part of a coroner, but this doesn't mean that he exudes gloom. It is due at the Apollo Sunday. “You'd Be Surprised” is an original screen play written especially for Griffith by Jules Furthman. The plot abounds in comedy and mystery with dramatic trimmings. And Griffith’s support includes such favorites as Earle Williams, long a star in his own right; Dorothy Sebastian, late of George White's “Scandals,” and Edward Martindel. Most of the action is laid on board a houseboat where a famous diamond is stolen at a party given by the district attorney. In order to give the thief a chance to relent, the host assembles his guests. places the empty jewel case on a table, and extinguishes the lights. When they are flashed on the district attorney is found with a knife througn his hear* —and the jewel case has disappeared. At the behest of a police captain the coroner undertakes to solve the puzzle, and from this point on the story is fraught with strange and mysterious happenings without the slightest clew as to the perpetrator. Just how the coroner, at the risk of his own life, discovers the identity of the criminal brings the tale to a tense and most extraordinary climax. Other films will include a Buster Brown comedy, “Buster’s Narrow Escape,” and the Fox news weekly. J. Russel Robinson and his orchestra will open an engagement at the Apollo Sunday. Robinson is noted as a pianist and composer of popular song hits. Asa special number the orchestra, featuring Eber B. Grubb, singing comedian, will offer a comedy oddity called “When Banana Skins Are Falling I'll Come Sliding Back to You.” Pasquale L.
