FOUR STATES IN SOUTH ’DRIED’ BY COLLEGIAN SQUAD Prohibition Success Under Leadership of 0. D. Jackson. Si/ NEA Service NEW ORLEANS, Oct. B.—Tune in the States of Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama, on the prohibition Jiews broadcasting circuit, stranger— Tune in these four States, where eight million souls, more or less, vied wit hKentuckians at making drinking an art in days gone by— Tune in these four States, where more than anywhere else in America the setting is made to order for illegal trafficking in the beverages that the law forbids— And get a* jolt. For be the news from other prohibition enforcement districts of the United States of America, what it may, the baldheaded administrator of District No. 10 is making his district dry, they say. The plump, clean-shaven, ruddycheeked O. D. Jackson is the Big Dry Boss in question. And it’s during the last year that the great change from exceeding wetness to tangible ardity has come over this storied land. College Men on Force There’s an army of seventy-five field agents and fifty clerks at Jackson's command. Most of them are college graduates. It’s from the hills of Arkansas—native home of dark and mysterious doings by mankind —down through cosmopolitan New Orleans, along a thousand Interlacing Gulf coast bays and bayous, and on out to the plantations of Mississippi and Alabama that they operate. Somehow, white prohibition enforcers’ north, east and west, have been bemoaning failure, Jackson’s army has been attaining success, “In five years,” says the administrator, ‘‘we will have the prohibition law as well enforced down here as any other law on the statute books.” There are statistics galore to back up Jackson, such as the walloping of moonshiners, rum runners and their kind for 1,246.1(10 gallons of in ten months. Two hundred per cent Is an average increase in the price of wet goods since Jackson and his men hit thejr gait. Rum rings whose scope almost staggered credulity have surrendered to Jackson after being hit for losses amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars. A Versatile Crew Jackson’s college-boy agents are interesting. They include men who can slug their way through the roughest waterfront “rough house,” men who know their triggers when shooting starts, men who are at home in evening dress at formal balls, men who can talk banking with bankers, the stock market with brokers, and business with business men. Jackson trusts them implicitly. There’s a reason. Every new agent is secretly tested for his honesty of purpose before he goes on any important “job.” And the administrator himself? His years in the navy made him, he says. Jackson enlisted in the navy at 18, and served all around the globe. During the World War, he was with the Naval Intelligence Service.
FAVORS BIRTH CONTROL Professor Says It Is Main Hope of Art Ideal Democracy. Bu Times Special Chicago, Oct. 8. Voluntary limitation of families in the main hope of bringing about an ideal democracy, in the opinion of Prof. Thomas Vernor Smith of Chicago University, who is soon to publish a book supporting birth control / Challenging opponents of birth control, Professor Smith declares that although such voluntary limitation is attacked in some quarters as a violation of natural laws, it actually is nothing but inheriated infear and half confessed mercenary interest which brings about a rejection of what is practiced normally and wholesomely by thousands.” In addition to birth control as art aid to real democracy Professor Smith recommends prohibition, cessation of war, abandonments of industrial autocracy and the promotion of universal brotherhood through religion. SHOOT 1,270 HORSES Killed in West to Prevent Eating and Destroying Pastures. Bv Times Special RENO, Nev., Oct. B.—Wild horses still abound in the West, but a spirited summer campaign against the animals resulted in a sharp decrease in their numbers. According to W. A. Richardson, State stock inspector, one wild horse will eat and destroy as much feed as three head of cattle. Because of this, hunters, operating under the United States Forestry Service, have shot and killed 1,270 wild horses in the Toyabe national forest. Care was exercised that domestic horses did not fall before the hunters and distinguishing marks or brands were put upon the tamed animals. In addition to the depredations of the mustangs upon feed, they also lead gentle horses off into their wild methods of living, Richarson explainedBIG FAMILIES BEST BERLIN, Oct. 8 —Big families produce the most thinkers, poets, musicians and artists. ‘'Opponents of birth control recently made this assertion, pointing out that Bach was the twelfth child, Mozart the seventh, Lessing the thirteenth, Haendel the tenth, Schumann and Kleist the fifth and Kant and Frederick the Great the fourth.
