ITALIANS ARE FAST BECOMING AMERICANIZED Jazz, Movies, Flivvers and ‘Eskimo Pies’ Have Helped. Bv United Pres* ROME, Oct. 8. —If tho Americanization of Italy can be attributed to anything, "jazz" and American movies are the thing. Safety razors, sewing machines, "flivvers," type writers and "Eskimo pie" have helped. American "jazz" is heard at cases, movies and social gatherings. Popular American music is sold in many of the music stores, and everybody dances American steps. The "Charleston” is the rage, and has become the dance of the aristocracy. The newspapers here have written columns about jazz, trying to find why it has taken such a grip among Italians. Movies Mean America As far as the cinema is concerned movies and American have become synonyms in Italy. When an Italian says movies, he thinks American. It would be difficult to see a film in Italy that Is not of American production. Moving pictures are undoubtedly the most important vehicle of American influences, as they present the full scope of American social, intellectual and moral ideals, be-

sides showing in an interesting style American life and customs. Douglas Fairbanks, Charle Chaplin and Mary Pickford are the most popular movie artists, having scored big successes with the Italian public. Such films as the "Gold Rush” and "The Thief of Bagdad" ran for many weeks to packed houses. The rush at the box offices for seats was such as to require the intervention of the police. Doug’s popularity with the Italian movie fans was aptly shown by she musing demonstrations given him and Mary on their recent visit to
Italy. Douglas is called “Dooglas" and Charlie Chaplin “Chario” by the Italian theater-goers. Safety Razors Ahead American safety razors and typewriters are ahead of those of other makes on the Italian market, though German and Italian razors and typewriters have lately begun to give the American products some lively competition. • WltWt one takes a stroll to the Colosseum on some moonlight night, he is as apt as not to espy a "flivver" either quietly or noisily halted un-

der the very shadow of that historic structure. Automatic gasoline pumps of American design were recently installed in Italian cities. They are much like the American gasoline pumps, but lack the profusion of electric light such as the American pumps have. A recent curiosity for Italy was the introduction of the "eskimo pie” which is sold at the picture shows and is called "Stella polare,” or “polar star.” MAN’S LIVELIHOOD IN SEp CARP Ready Market for So-Called ‘Undesirables.’ Bu United Press MANISTEE. Mich., Oct. B.—Thousands of amateur fishermen who angle in Michigan waters for sport regard carp as a menace to their pleasure, but Edward Oswald of Spring Lake, Mich., finds his position as a professional carp fisherman profitable. Oswald, who has been supplying carp to fish markets in large cities for many years, works under the supervision of State conservation authorities. The presence of a super abundance of carp endangers the supply of desirable fish and their spiwn. This has led Thomas Trimble, chairman of the fish propagation committee of the Manistee chapter of the Izaak
Walton League, to secure Oswald’s services here. At present Oswald is inspecting Manistee Lake and Big Manistee River with prospect of seining carp f/om these waters next spring as soon as the ice breaks. He plans to build a pen of sheet spiles near tho mouth of Big River, where he will keep his fish until fall when the market is high. There have been 4,167 lynchings in the United States since 1886.
PIMPLES ON FACEJND BACK Festered and Itched and Burned. Cuticura Heals. “ My face and back were affected with pimples that were hard, large and red. The pimples festered and scaled over and itched and burned causing me to scratch. Scratching caused eruptions and my face was disfigured. My clothing aggravated the breaking out and I lost my rest on account of the irritation. The trouble lasted about four and a half months. “ I began using Cuticura Soap and Ointment and after using four cakes of Soap and four boxes of Ointme.it I was healed.” (Signed) Miss Evelyn Hagborg, 2851 Newland Ave., Chicago. 111., Feb. 27. 1926.
