CURFEW IS ALL ‘BOSH’ TO PUPILS Shortridge Students Condemn Ordinance Passed by Cou/ici. “Applesauce and grape ffuit!” That’s what Shortridge High School students think of the new curfew measure passed by city conn cil and now before Mayor Duvall for his signature. The measure provides that all persons under 17 years of age must lie off the streets by 9 p. m. unless they are chaperoned. Girl students were most explicit ir. their condemnation than the boys. "Just Silly” "I wonder late those aidermen stayed out when they were young?” was the query of Miss Josephine Reynolds, Shortridge senior, age 17. "Such a regulation is just silly. Those who don't tnind anyway are not going to miml the curfew. Does the council think that we are Americans or Puritans?” Proponents of the measure said i that, it would curb the juvenile “crime wave.” Bernice Mull. 16, junior. 124 E. Forty-Seventh St., said that she heard of the permanent wave, but not the crime wave. “The law, if needed at all. should make the limit 16,” she said. "My parents never let me gf\ out until 1 was 16 and now I don’t want the council to come along and spoil it. I’m in at 11 o’clock except when I get special permission for parties. This is a matter for parents to rcgulate.it seems to me.” Ruth Scott. 16, junior, 3002 E. Fall Creek Blvd., declared the measure too absorb for comment. "Getting youngsters to stay home is up to the folks and not the police,” she declared. "Doesn’t Mean Anything” "Such a law doesn’t mean anything,” Lucille McCormick, 15, of 823 XV. Twenty-Eighth St., declared. “It sure won’t go over very big. Just because we stay out until after 9 p. m., is no sign we- are going to steal a machim and rob a filling station. That can be done in the daytime, by those who make it their business.” Lillian O’Riley, 1935 N. Talbot St., said "goody,” when told about the law. Her seventeenth birthday was last month. Virginia Cochrane, IC, of 4221 Broadway saw no reason to think it wrong to stay out after 9 “if your parents don’t object.” Margaret Marshall, 16, of 2837 Cnrrolton Ave., when told about the new law, inuqired "What for?” Walter Peek, 16, of 3334 N. New Jersey St., was one of * the boy students who voted it "Applesauce.” It was pointed out that the football players already are under rules that require them to be in early. REALTORS AT FT.
