WARDEN KEEPS REPORTERS OUT (Continued Frhm Page 1) lobby SYvings open, Warden Daly steps out —the reporters don’t step in! Warden Daly hasn't time for many reporters YVho come*here. He usually is ‘‘too busy to see them.” To those Yvith Yvhom he talks he tells tne same old story, that “This prison has rules; they shg.ll be kept.” And the rule that is being enforced with all the prison administrative machinery, at present, is “no newspaper man shall interview anybody within these walls!” So it was that, after repeating to numerous neyspaper men numerous times, Tuesday, that under no condition could they see, let alone talk to former Klan Chief Stephenson Yvho is said to want to talk and has much to say, the warden, quite riled and peeY'ed, said his bit. “Not Receivable” Which is that: Newspapermen, no matter what their mission, are ‘‘not receivable.” So “doYvn on the reporters and editors” is Warden Daly that a newspaper man, had he a brother or father or son in prison, would not be pertntited to see that relative while was kept there. “Only relatives of prisoners, or persons having business with them, are permitted to see the prisoners,” Warden Daily explains, inferring that newspaper men have no business. Warden Daily hid behind the clean skirts of former Warden Edward Fogarty in upholding his prison rule of barring reporters from interviewing prisoners, no matter who they be. “The rule is old; we had it when Warden Fogarty was here. You men know Mr. Fogarty,” Warden Daily Fogarty's successor, told the South Eend neYvspaper men whose mission there was not at all to see Stephenson or talk with him. Sought to See Gunman The reporters had gone to the prison to have a word or two with Raymond Moseley, youthful gunman, who a few years ago left dead and injured in the path of his drunken rampage. The reporters wished to see the boy: to knoYV if he still were within the confines of the prison walls, where he had been placed by St. Joseph County. His boast had been that his prison term would be brief; his days there fevr. This mission and this information was imparted to the warden. But the newspapermen were not believed. “You men came here to try to put something over on me!” Warden Daily told the newspaper men, who had handed him a letter of introduction from the mayor, asking that courtesy be shown to the bearer. The present mayor had been Moseley’s counsel. Moseley was very well, thank you, and not at all crazy, contrary to the plea upon which he had won leniency in the form of a life sentence, the warden commented. And Ihen Daly again fired his pet accusation that these South Bend reporters “were trying to put something o\ - er.” “Belongs to State” “We told you why we came; why we are here. We Yvish to see Mosely, to question him. He is a St. Joseph County prisoner, placed in the keeping of the State, for life,” the reporters reminded Daly. “The county is through with him; he now belongs to the State. You came not to see him. You came to test our prison rule, to see if it is consistent,” Daly remarked. “What rule is that 7" “You know what rule; yqu want to interview someone, just to see if it is possible,” Daly answered. “We came to see Moseley. You insist that Yve didn't. Do you mean that we are liars?” “No, I didn't say that. I have my suspicions. I don’t Yvant to argue. I don't want to quarrel. C.oodby," and the warden turned away. “Then you mean that a newspaper man as an individual coull see no one in this prison?” a reporter hurled at him. ‘That’s\ Yvhat I said." and the lock of the iron door clicked as Daly disappeared into the confines of his office, where newspaper men—are not!

DRY LAW MENACE, DECLARESAUTHOf Nicholson Scores Officials Before Medical Body. Warning that second-rate mer soon would \ yield to “crooks" ir local government, Meredith Nichoi' son, Hoosler author, scored public officials and denounced prohibition in an address before the Indianapolis Medical Society, Tuesday night at the Athenaeum. “The Indianapolis First campaign is all right, tut I Yvould say to the men, yvlio conducted it that the best advertisement the city would havn Yvottid be of being able to proclaim to the world that Indianapolis is th best governed city in the United States,” Nicholson said. “Prohibition is the most serious menace of the present generation," he said. “Crime has increased rather than decreased as a result of it. The corner saloon has gone and \Y*e don’t want it back. Brick Red Suits Latest for Men Bu United Press LONDON, Oct. 6.—Brick red and beige, to be followed by autumn green in the spring, are on the current color menu for men’s suits, as offered by Savile tailors. For the careful and conventional man, the tailors say, brick red is ex- [ pected to be popular, but the beige is ready for the man Yvho feels that he wants to keep up Yvith his wife in ! smartness. Tailors believe that color in men’s clothes has pome to stay, and they are backing their belief by ordering hundreds of yards of apple green cloth for spring suits. Double breasted business suits, with full, turned-up trousers, are still fashionable. Hats, ties and socks are to harmonize wltt the main color scheme.
