BANK PROTECTIVE PLAN IS PRAISED BY MISSf DANIEL Secretary of Indiana Association Speaks at National Convention. Bv Times Special LOS ANGELES, Cal., Oct. s.—The vigilante or county unit protective plan, for safeguarding banks from bandits, was explained and praised by Miss Forba McDaniel, secretary of the Indiana Bankers Association, speaking before the State secretaries’ section of the American Bankers Association convention here today. She pointed out that while from July, 1924, to July, 1925, the year previous to the inauguration of the vigilante organization, thirty-three Indiana banks were attacked by bandits, with loss of SBB,OOO, from July, 1925, .to July, 1926, the year in which vigilantes were organized, only nine banks were attacked, with loss of but $19,000. Reduction of 60 per cent in bank crimes and violence and 80 per cent in bank losses has resulted in the past year in Indiana, Illinois, lowa, Oklahoma, Kansas and Minnesota, through operation of this protective plan which originated in lowa, she asserted. Miss McDaniel explained that the plan briery is: A county bankers’ association is organized and a county protective organization formed within it; rewards of SI,OOO or more for the capture and conviction of bank bandits, dead or alive are offered: guards or vigilantes are selected by each bank, are appointed deputy sheriffs and are armed. She also told of the signal system, worked out with telephone companies, whereby the alarm quickly can be spread to adjoining counties and to State headquarters. "In Indiana we have sixty-eight counties organized, with an army of 1,700 men equipped with 800 rifles, 1,250 revolvers and plenty of ammunition. “The lives of two assistant cashiers were sacrificed during the reign of banditry in Indiana prior to our county unit protective organization.” Miss McDaniel also told of the bankers’ State shoot, hekj at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. Ind. "No single activity in the history of our association aroused so much interest or pitched our entire membership to such a degree of enthusiasm as this State-wide competition of marksmanship among the vigilantes,” she said. COAL RATES UPHELD State Chamber of Commerce Loses Before I. C. C. Bn United Press WASHINGTON, Oct. s.—Present rates on soft coal from Ohio and the inner crescent to Indiana points were held reasonable by the Interstate Commerce Commission today. The Indiana State Chamber of Commerce complained the rates were unjust, unreasonable and unduly prejudicial. The commission dismissed the complaint.

i Peaches Browning Leaves Love Nest Bn United Press NEW YORK, Oct. s.—Romance has gonb on a vacation from the love nest of Frances (Peaches) Browning, the “Cinderella girl,” and Edward W. Browning, her 59-year-old wealthy Prince Charming. Peaches has gone with her mother to a secluded cottage in New Jersey. Browning has gone back to his bachelor quarters in an exclusive hotel. “Our separation is only temporary,” was the statement which Browning authorized his secretary to issue for him. "Mrs. Browning is tired.” "The reason will have to come from Mr. Browning,” Peaches said, just a bit defiantly. “And he will have to say for how long our separation will be.” "My daughter has been with me today and she has told me nothing,” Mrs. Heenan, mother of Peaches, said. “You know the child is ill, discouraged, and on the verge of nervous collapse. I have been with her for two weeks.”
