Hu United Press ST V LOUIS, Oct. s.—The bright particular stars of the world series teams twinkled but feebly in the first two games. When the news was noised about that the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals would fight it out in the 1926 classic, the lovers of swat were jubilant at the prospect of seeing Babe Ruth and Rogers Hornsby engage in a "batting duel of the ages." Here were two batting heroes who bold most of the slugging records in their respective leagues. The fans figured that the opposing outfielders would enjoy a great deal of road work as a result of the activities of the two extraordinary wallopers. But after the first two games had passed both Ruth and Hornsby had a batting average of .143 —the result of one hit apiece in seven legal trips to the plate. In the first game Hornsby was held hitless by Pennock and Ruth reached Sherdel for one single. Sunday Ruth was at the mercy of Alexander -and Hornsby nicked Shocker for one hit. The fans are wondering whether Hornsby and Ruth will yet provide the thrills that were expected from them. One the fate of Roger Peckinpaugh in last year's series when the American League’s "most valuable player" committed eight errors, contributing largely to Washington's downfall.

PRESBYTERIANS TO CELEBRATE AT VINCENNES Indiana Synod Will Observe 100th Anniversary of Founding, The Centennial of the Presbyterian Church, Synod of Indiana, Is being celebrated at Vincennes this week. The Synod is meeting In the First Presbyterian Church, Vincennes, of which Dr. J. W. Boyer is pastor. The Women's Synodical Society is meeting in Bethany Presbyterian Church, Vincennes, of which Dr. John Welsh is pastor. The session of* the Synod will be presided' over by Dr. J. Ambrose Dunßel of Indianapolis, moderator. Dr. S. A. Stewart of La Porte will be stated clerk. Mrs. Will H. Adams of Indianapolis will offiicate as president of the Women’s Synodical Society. In preaching the opening sermon tonight. Dr. Dunkel will use the same text that was used by the Rev. John M. Dickey at the meeting 100 years ago, which marked the organization of the Synod. The text is from Genesis 18:19 and Is as follows: "For I know him, that he will command his chib rlrcn and his household after and they shall keep the way of twr Lord, to do justice and Judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him." Secretary to Speak The centennial address will be delivered Wednesday, by Dr. William Chalmers Covert of Philadelphia, general secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education, following the unveiling of a centennial tablet at 2:30 p. m. This tablet is a memorial presented by the three original churches which comprised the local mission field when the Synod of Indiana was organized 100 years ago. After Dr. Covert's address the delegates will Join in a centennial pilgrimage to historic points of the neighborhood. In the evening there will be a centennial pageant under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Green of Indianapolis in the Junior High School Auditorium. Recalls Report Baynard R. Hall of Bloomingtoh rode on horseback to Vincennes 100 years ago and reported the Protestant assemblage as being made up of "delegates principally from the land of Hooslers and Suckers, but with a smart sprinkling of Cornerackera from beyond the father of floods and even one or two from the Buckeye country. They were worn both in apparel and body as they entered the town on Jaded horses, after many days of hard and dangerous traveling away from their cabin homes in dim woods beyond hills and prairies." Mr. Hall commented on "cordial and reciprocal greetings at each new arrival, their oourtesy in debate, their deep Interest in each other's welfare, their lively emotions excited by their religious narratives and anecdotes, and their tender farewells.
