NEW HIGHS MADE AT OPENING BY STEEL,MOTORS Continuation of 4 Per Cent Bank Rate, Basis of Drive. Rtl X’nited Press NEW YORK, Oct. I.—Due largely to an increase of 54,994,000 in bills rediscounted 1 , occasioned by the October settlements, the reserve ratio of the entire Federal reserve system showed a falling off to 72.6 per cent, against 73.1 per cent a week ago. However, the comparison with the same time last year was more favorable, the figure at that time having been 72.5 per cent. Although rediscounts expanded $8,788,000 at this center, the reserve ratio of the New York bank firmed up to 79*. compared with 79.5 per cent a week ago and 73.6 per cent a year ago. This strengthening and the continuation of the local bank rate at 4 per cent was made the basis for a drive against an over-extended short interest in the early dealings on the stock market today. Steel Common ran up to new high ground on the current movement at 151 >4, p 114, while General Motors established a record high at 16314. up 2 points. Radio Corporation -was featured among the specialties, reach, ing the best levels of 1926 at 57, up 4 points from Thursday’s close.

WHEAT LOWER AS . LIVERPOOL DROPS Ignore Delay in Movements Because of Rain. Ru T'nftrd Prcß* CHICAGO, Oct. I.—Dower Diverpool cables were the dominating influence In the opening of the Chicago board of trade this morning. News of rains over many parts of the grain country was almost completely ignored. Wheat opened %c to lower. Rains in Manitoba and the Western | Candian provinces have again de-! layed the movement from that section, but it is expected to get under way before the close of navigation on the Lakes. This was overshadowed by the Liverpool prices. There was no change in com values. More rain was reported over the belt although it is said to be clearing up over lowa and Nebraska. However this cereal his i disregarded the weather factor for | almost three weeks, and will thore- | fore probably take Its trend from | wheat today. Oats is still badly in need of some I new incentive. The opening was unI changed to % lower, j There was little done In piovisicns : early in the day.
