FORD 5-DAY PLAN DRAWS INTEREST OF ECONOMISTS „ 1 Differ on Success of Two Weekly Holidays for Workers. Bv United Pres* CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. I.—Harvard University economists have turned to Henry Ford’s announcement of the institution of a five-day week in his automobile plants as one of the interesting recent developmental the field of economics. While the general tendency among the economists is to withhold final judgment while they stand by and watch the working of the plan in practice, Prof. William Ripley, one of the most famous economists, pointed out that “Mr. Ford is a practical man” and that “if people are offered an incentive, it stands to reason they will work all the harder.” Opinions Vary Prof. Thomas Nixon Ca-ver believed Ford’s plan impractical while Prof. Arthur E. Monroe said the Ford industries were not typical. “Perhaps it will work out all right,” Carver asserted. "It’s ultimate results cannot of course be determined at this time. Mr. Ford believes that the five-day week will have the effect of Increasing the output of his plant through high-pres-sure production during the five working days. It seems to me that the effect will be just the opposite. “If a manufacturer wishes to cut down his output, I thinuk the in stitution of a five-day week would be a good way of accomplishing it. It stands to reason, I think, that a workman cannot accomplish as much in five days as in six. Os course even at present the working week of five and a half days is quite general. Sign of Decadence “The multiplication of holidays always is a sign of decadence in any country. History shows this to be true. There is a current tendency, a rather marked one, toward reducing the time of employment, but I cannot see how this tendency is going to have a desirable effect on industry. .“What Mr. Ford’s employes will do with the extra time allotted them under the five-day-week plan is another questoin. It is difficult to strike an average and say to what purpose this new freedom will be put. Some workers probably will use the new holiday to good advantage. But others won't.” Is Interesting Prof. William Z. Ripley did not care to discuss Ford’s plan at length, but admitted that it interested him. A. l ' o ' l & sk me whether or not I Mpk it ic practical,” he said. “Well, Mr. Ford is a practical man. If people are offered an incentive, it stands to reason that they will work all the harder.” Prof. Arthur E. Monroe pointed to the fact that the Ford Industry was

not typical—that it was highly specialized. "It is therefore difficult to say whether or not the five-day plan would work out satisfactorily or profitably in industries in general,” he asserted. “Asa matter of fact, college theorists do not know much about the potentialities of such a proposition. The man actually engaged in the manufacturng business is the only one who is really an authority on the matter." TO TRY CATALINA SWIM Bu United Press BOSTON, Oct. I.—Two New Englanders, both conquerors of the English channel, plan to compete in the Catalina Island swim to*be held in California within a few weeks. They are Henry Sullivan of Lowell, first American to negotiate the English channel, and Charles Toth of Boston. The latter already has gone West to prepare for the swim, and Sullivan will leave for Califor nia within a fortnight. AS LONDON SEES IT LONDON.—A current London musical show spills the following line concerning American divorce laws: “I say, I understand she was married three times.” “Yes, indeed, she was married three times, twice in America and once in earnest.”
