APPOINTMENT OF HUGHES PLEASES Will Represent U. S. at The Hague Court. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, Oct. I.—Appointment of Charles Evans Hughes as United States member of The Hague permanent court of arbitration was well received in the legal and political circles here today. The former Secretary of State and former Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court will serve six years, succeeding the late George Gray. President Coolidge’s action in filling the American seat on The Hague arbitration tribunal has no relation whatever to the Administration’s attitude toward United States adherence to the League of Nations world court und°r the "Senate reservations, it was said. RECORD JUSTICE METED Judge Sentences Slayer of Chicago Cop to Hang. Bu United Press CHICAGO, Oct. I.—Justice established a record for swiftness in Criminal Court here when Richard Evans was convicted of the murder of Policeman Edward Finnegan, after a Jury deliberated but ten minutes on his fate and Judge Harry Miller one minute later imposed a hanging sentence. The hanging verdict was the third obtained this week by Assistant State’s Attorneys Herald Levy and Emmett Byrne. Evans killed Finnegan when the officer was taking him to police station for reckless driving last March. Later it developed Evans was driving a stolen automobi'e. The youth fled and was not arrested until several months had passed. Evans must hang Oct. 22, Judge Miller ruled. Oct 22 would have been Finnegan’s second anniversary of his wedding.
