Times Waahinnton Bureau. l.tas Xeto York Avenue WASHINGTON, Sept. 30.—Where did they come from, those whispering pygmies just discovered in wild New Guinea? If the Stirling expedition explorers return to civilization with an answer, one of the greatest mysteries of science will be solved. The. presence of dwarfed black men in the far southeast is one of the tyggest problems in anthropology, Dr. A. Hrdlicka of the Smithsonian Institute, declared today. A year ago, during a long scientific trip to strange corners of the world, the Washington scientist studied the problem at first hand, and in his report, recently, published, indicated that pygmies even more surprising than those reported by the Stirling expedition hight eventually be discovered in the East Indies. In Sumatra, a great island almost as unexplored as New Guinea, Dr. Hrdlicka heard stories from the coast natives of strange little men inhabiting the Interior, men covered with long, red hair and with bodies like 12-year-old children. White men on the island were organizing an exploring expedition while the anthropoligist was there, but no definite Word of the outcome has yet reached the world. I lar, according to Dr. Hrdlicka, to tha Negrito tribes known for years In the Philippines and Andaman Islands. "The Negrito is in the far southeast.” the anthropolist explained, "a clear but puzzling type without connection now in any direction. His nearest relatives are apparently the pygmies of Central Africa, but a great unbridged span has until now separated the two. The problem Is: How did the Negrito get to his present' home. If he extended from Africa, he must have left traces in passing in Arabia and India.” Dr. Hrdlicka discovered last year what he believed to be traces in India. He reported finding Negrito people along the coast of that coun try. If the pygmies extended from Africa, as now seems somewhat probable, they had to venture thousands of miles through unknow seas in their toy boats. PLAN MUSIC PROGRAM Will be Presented at K. of C.
