JOHN’S NIGHT For a moment there was an awkward tension and then I said, “Come on* I’m hungry, I just remember that I haven t had any luncheoij today. Whether I am more like an angel or a chicken may be discussed and disputed, but there can be only one thing about my healthy appetite, and it’s making a noise just now like a tiger which must be appeased.” I heard Joan say to her brother when we arrived at the porte cochere, “I .am afraid you are learning very fast, Buddy,” for he had calmly taken a seat beside me In the town car and left hfs sister and his friend to take the other seats. If he heard her he made no sign. I could not help looking at him. It seemed to me when I thought afterward about it and him that John Meredith had some queer feeling only that night was his and he intended to let no yne spoil it, not even himself. Consequently, when he sat beside me he threw his arm about my shoulder in ,-a perfectly matter of fact way and drew me up to him. I nestled down beside his heavy Eng-

When we arrived at the Beaux Arts Restaurant I found much to my surprise that Mamie was waiting with Jerry. “Were you the girl that Jerry was going to take out If I didn’t go with him?” I asked. "No, my dear, that was Just Jer- ■ ry’s bunk, I hadn’t expected to go anywhere with him. but Miss Meredith called me up late this afternoon and asked me if I would let Jerry call for me and bring me down here to dinner. She explained that her brother seemed to have taken a great fancy to you and for the first time in his life he had arranged a pubic party at which he was making his appearance among a number of people. She said that she was afraid a foursome would make the party almost too intimate, so she had persuaded Jerry to attend and suggested that he should bring me. Are you glad I came, Judy?” “Very glad,” 1 answered, for I saw immediately that the presence of Mamie and Jerry would effectually put a stop to any more love-making,

however surreptitious. I had reckoned however without that feeling that seemed to be hanging over John. He had evidently laid himself and his affairs on the knees of the gods and determined to be happy In hisown way for that one evening. His hermit-liwe life had made John Meredith perfectly oblivious to every one but himself, after the first moment when he got over his selfconsciousness. With a glance around the room he dismissed every one except himself and me from his consciousness. I had a feeling that to him there was no one else in that vast dining room but myself. As I had requested Jerry, we had a very conspicuous table, and yet it was arranged in such a manner that no one was very near us. When we started down the long room, John had possessed himsalf of my wrap and putting his hand upon my bare arm he led me without any feeling of the unconventionality of it to the gorgeously flower-decked table, and the others follower). John placed me on his right and Jerry appropriated the chair at my left with Mamie next him. “Mamie was gowned in an orchid chiffon, which with Joan's green made my white costume very conspicuous. I could not be oblivious to all th< ittention we were exciting, especiall as Marble leaned across Jerry and said, “There is Mrs. Buddy Tremaine, and she is talking about us.” (Copyright. 1926, NEA Service, Inc.) CAN’T USE HIS FORK? I DON’T JUDGE BY THA
“Clothes do not make the man." That’s a trite old ■ and with it might go the statement that “Manners do not! the man.” While we can’t pretend that they are unimpol yet after all, forms of etiquette are only outward. r
The golden rule should govern social behavior. If we have the right attitude toward our fellow beings we are going to treat them fairly and with kindness, whether we shake hands on just the same provocation they do or not. The man or woman who uses the salad fork for the main course is not nearly so much of a problem as the one who takes mean advantage of another or depends upon his polish' and social charm to “get by” on doubtful procedure.^. FRIEND HAS CHI DE MANNERS Dear Martha Lee: Please advise me. I have made the . acquaintance of a youngman whom I like very much; he seems so sincere and straightforward. Hut Miss Lee, I’D confess that I'm quite shamed to take him into my eirclo of friends, as he seems to kifow almost nothing about food manners. He does not rise when a ady comes into the room, or anything like that, and he seems very awkward and ill at ease in company; but he s -ems so sweet and sincere. I like him very much, and I don't know just what to do. MAE. Well, my dear, your friend may prove to be a diamond in the rough, so be a little patient and see if he doesn’t improve. As your acquaintance deepens, you are likely to have the opportunity to gently correct him on some of his outstanding faults of etiquette, and if he has real desire to improve, he will then indicate it. Many very fine men have had, owing to early lack of opportunity, very crude manners. Abraham Lincoln is an example and his manners were much improved, it is said, by his wife. Anyway, don-’t think of relinquishing a friendship with a man you naturally like so well for a matter of surface manners. See if you can’t help him.
