WHITE HOUSE IS J AGAIN MECCA OF 1 MANY THOUSANDS President Greets Sixty-Sev-* en People on First Day of His Return. Ahrs Wnxhhinton Bureau. 1322 New York Avenue WASHINGTON, Sept. 27— I Thei White House again is the mecca oi) the tourist thousands, who Washington daily. The President and Mrs. Coolidge) have returned and the executive mansion is again open to inspection) by citizens of the United Statesj Sightseeing busses are bringing! hundreds a day to the east entrance! •if the White House, where touristsj who have not obtained special card 4 of admission are received. admission the White House have) been issued hy Patrick McKennai the veteran chief usher, since the) Coolidges became the tenants. These! cards guarantee the holders a complete view of the lower floors ofj the mansion, including all of the| historic rooms and exhibits. Despite! the ten weeks’ absence from Washj* ington of the President and MnS Coolidge, during the height of the' summer tourist season, more than! 60,000 admission cards have been' issued in 1926. Shakes Hands The President resumed his custom! of meeting and shaking hands with those who wish to see him immediately upon his return from liisl vacation. Although it was not gen-i orally known that the President! would take time to meet visitors he' iihook hands with sixty-seven people| '.he first day of his return and 161 I he second day. Mr. Coolidge enjoys these contacts with the folks. He stands in the center of his office in front of his desk, as the visitors file through in a line. He chats with them all and, when he recognizes an old friend' he greets him as such. Holds Record President Coolidge holds all White House records for shaking hands and meeting people, even though he has traveled around the country less than his recent predecessors. His biggest month was when he met 13,000 people, according to records kept by White Houso police and hfs biggest day, aside from formal receptions, was a day in that month when he greeted 1,800 visitors. On the occasion of the annual New Year’s reception this year Mr. and Mrs. Coolidge greeted 3,257 weili wishers. They stood in line hours as the great and near-great filed past. Mrs. Coolidge receives with tlie President on all formal occasions, but most of the more than 130,000 people who have personally greeted the President in the White House failed to see M4’s. Coolidge. Those who succeeded in seeing the President are vouched for *fTefore hand. They usually come armed with a letter from a Senator or a Congressman, which is presented to Chief Usher McKenna. After ho ckehs it, Chief Sergeant Dalrymple of the White House police invites the visitors to wait or return about 12:30. A line is then formed and the visitors are ushered into the President’s office with a minimum of lost motion. The precautionary measures adopted by the Secret Service "whenever the President travels are not relaxed during these informal receptions. Alert, athletic young men stand in vantage points js the visitors file through. Thyre has been no untowai’d incidents in connections with these receptions, but the Secret Service vigilance is never relaxed.
