FRANCO GERMAN •PACT VITAL TO EUROPFSFUTURE Briand and Stresemann Are Leaders of New Movement. Times WnsMnoton Bureau. lsta A’ei o York Avenue. PARIS, Sept. 24.—As an aftermath of the Geneva conference and their meeting at TJteh-y, M. Briand and Dr. Stressmann today find themselves willy-nilly leaders of a new movement, which, win or lose, Inevitably will have the most profound effect on the future of Europe. Dr. Stresemann, foreign minister of Germany, says: “There never can be peace in Europe until the Francoi German problem is solved.’’ M. Briand, foreign minister of France, says: “I was premier during j the most terrible hours of the war. I will do everything in my power to prevent such hours ever having to be lived again. 1 ' Pledge Selves So, when at a country Inn at Theiry, at the foot of Jura mountain, these two solemnly pledged themjffilves to the idea of a Franco-Ger-SPh reproachment, they started eomething of which the world is to hear much henceforward. As for Briand, he returns to Paris probably the biggest man in France. Already ten times premier and sponsor oi France's part in the Locarne treaties, he has suddenly became not ■ only the center of a political storm, but an entire political party in himself, platform and all. "Franco Needs Peace” He says, “France needs peace and lota of good Frenchmen think so with me.” In this he is quite correct, but France has her nationalists, too, and these already are lambasting Briand by word and cartoon as a dupe misled by German chicanery. France suffered horribly in the war and many are unable, and even unwilling, to forget and forgive. These accused Briand of too hastily offering to “turn history’s page.” Nevertheless/ Briai/d undoubtedly will have an enormous ' following, and it will be Interesting to see how the Poincare governilent receives his report outlining this most important turn European politics have taken in the past hundred years.! Justly or unjustly, Poincare is regarded as a big stick advocate and proponent of the Ruhr policy. 1 France-German approchement is bound to have Stupendous political, economic and financial results if it is successful. Thus Britain may be relied upon to watch developments
