'CIVIC LEADERS v OF STATE WILL DISCUSS SAFETY Safeguarding Human Life to Be Topic of ConferL ' ence Oct. 12. -n Civic leaders from all parts of the Nrate are to participate In the Indiana Street and Highway Safety Conference at the Statehouse, Oct. 12 and 13, according to Public Service Commisioner Frank. T. Singleton, conference chairman. During the two-day program, addresses will be made by public of- | ficlals, utility heads and educators, all of whom are interested in the promotion <sf public safety. The conference will represent the first move, on a large scale, toward tHe betterment of conditions which govern safety and is expected to develop a solution to some of the major problems of safeguarding human life. Jackson on Program Following an invocation at the opening session by the Rev. Orien W. Fifer, an address of welcome will be given by Governor Jackson. Purposes of the meeting will be set out by Singleton, who will preside. Charles L. Henry, president of the Indianapolis' & Cincinnati Traction Company, will outline recommendations of the recent safety conference sponsored by Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover. The principal address at the afternoon session on the first day will be a discussion of traffic on Indiana highways by John D. Williams, director of the State highway commission. An open discussion will follow, led by George Davis of the State police force, and A., C. Spiegel of Ft. Wayne. Addresses on motor vehicle common carrier service on the public highways will be made by Rhbert I. Marsh, general counsel for independent bus operators; J. A. Van Osdol, counsel for the Union Traffic Company, and Tom Snyder, secretary of the Indiana Transfer and Warehousemen's Association. Owen to Talk Other afternoon speakers will be Charles W. Whitsett of Indianapolis will render invocation at opening of the second day’s session. Safety from the standpoint of the private automobile owner will be the subject of an address by Claude Smith, judge of the Gibson Circuit Court. Dr. Albert R. Ross, mayor of Lafayette, and W. H. Settle, president of the Indiana Farm Bureau Federation, will head a discussion on general safety problems, followed by an address by Dr. Henry Noble Sherwood, State superintendent of public instruction, on "Safety Education in the Public Schools."
