SENATE VICTORY - IS DEMOCRATIC 1 ELECTION HOPE Must Unseat Eight Republicans to Get Complete Control. Times Washinaton Rurctm. 1322 Sew York Avenue WASHINGTON, Sept. 21.—The primaries concluded, Republican and Democratic political leaders are turning their attention to the more serious business of the November election. Control of Congress is the stake, Democrats are launching a terrific drive from Washington to elect majority membership in the Senate and the House of Representatives and Senator Teter Goelet’Gerry of Rhode Island, chairman of the Democratic senatorial committee, and Representative William Oldfield of Arkansas, chairman of the congressional committee; each predict victory. Republican campaign headquarters in Chicago have repeatedly issued similar statements. The Senate now consists of fiftyfive Republicans, forty Democrats and one farmer-labor. To gain complete control the Democrats must unseat at least eight Republicans. The States Here are ihe States where Demo| crats are confident of victory: Kentucky: Senator Richard P. Ernst, opposed by Representative Alben W. Barkley. Oklahoma: Senator John W. Harreld, opposed by Representative Elmer Thomas. Missouri: Senator George H. WilHams, opposed by Representative Harry Hawes. Arizona: Senator Ralph H. Cameron, opposed by Representative Carl Hayden. Nevada: Senator Tasker L. Oddie, opposed by Ray Baker, former director of the mint. Maryland: Senator ©. E. Weller, opposed by Millard E. Tydings. Democratic victories in each of these six States are regarded by Democrats heer as "certain.” Volstead Law Factor They feel that Senator James W. Wadsworth will be beaten in New York by Supreme Court Justice Robert F. Wagner, who virtually has been agreed upon as the Democratic nominee. Wadsworth’s pronounced views for modification of the Volstead law have caused a split in the New lork G. O. P. and he faces the opposition of a bone-dry independent Republican. Because Justice Wagner nas the warm support of' Governor Smith, Democratic campaign managers are inclined to add New York to their list of prospective victories. N Decision of Senator Robert N. Stanfield, who was defeated in the primaries, to run as an "independent” causes the belief that Bert Haney, Democratic nominee, will be elected in Oregon. , Woollen in Indiana Indiana advices are to the effect that Evans Woollen, Democratic nominee, may defeat Senator A. R. Robinson and Senator James E. Watson has a battle on hand .while the split in the Colorado Republican party leads to the belief that former Governor Sweet, Democratic nominee, will defeat Charles W. Waterman, the Republican nominee. All of the resources of the Democratic campaign committees will be applied in Massachusetts to defeat Senator William M. Butler and in Ohio against Senator Frank B. Willis. Democrats say their nominees have an "even chance” in both States. Although no claims are being made for lowa, Democrats call attention to letters from lowa which indicate that Claude Porter, Democratic senatorial nominee, may develop surprising strength against former Senator Smith TV. Brookhart. With this thought in mind, Democrats will give Porter all the help they can provide.
BANK EMPLOYES REPORTED SAFE Sol Meyer Receives Goocl News From Miami. Sol Meyer, president of the local Meyer-Kiser Bank, was elated today upon reception of a telegram from Fred Steele, cashier of the MeyerKiser Bank at Miami, saying that all employes of the bank were safe and uninjured* The bank building wa badly damaged by the storm, but will not have to be razed. Engineers expected to have it back in shape in a few weeks, the message stated. Temporary quarters were opened across the street and* “business as usual” was the spirit on Monday, according to Steele. Only funds necessary for immediate needs were withdrawn and deposits were in excess of the withdrawals, he stated. Many employes lost their homes and Steele saved nothing but the suit of clothes that he wore. Steele was formerly of Battonville, Ind.. and fifteen of the bank’s employes are Hoosiers, several being from Indianapolis. FIRST LIVERY STONED CHICAGO, Sept. 21.—One of Chicago's earliest liveries was maintained by Mrs. Louise de Koven Bowen. The first time she rode out in her conspicuous equipage, with a footman liveried in gorgeous colors and silver buttons, small boys hooted at the retinue and threw volleys of stones and rotten egs. Once Mrs. Bowen was in bed for two'days after having been struck with a -A ing missile. w Automobiles for Sale | HIT THE MARK! 1 1233 3>. C °‘ |*<3oJ
