GROCER, BURGLAR EXHANGE MS AT STORE DOOR Clyde Warman Shoots It Out With Man Attempting Entrance. Burglars who early today engaged in a gun battle with Clyde AVarman, grocer, 2760 Sangster Ave., In shots were fired through closed doors in the store, were sought today by police. Warman gave police a substantial clew to the prowlers who awakened him at 2 a. m. Warman told Sergt. John Volderauer that he fired two shots through an east door in the rear of the store when a voice commanded him to open a door or "they wouW kill him.’’ Shots were returned thrqugh a south door Warman said, and he fired again through a window screen. The men fled. Entrance to the store was gained through a side window, but nothing was missing. Mrs. Juanita Haas, 30, of 256 Leeds Ave., was knocked unconscious by a burglar at her home. She entered her bedroom and was struck on the head by a man hidden near the front windows. . Her screams attracted Merle Ut-f terback, 254 Leeds Avq., who was unable locate the man. Entrance was gained through removal of a screen. Police found cigarets and matches on the front porch roof. Mrs. Haas was not seriously injured. Sam Niesenbaum, grocer at Baltimore Ave. and Twenty-Fifth St., was robbed of S3O by a Negro bandit late Tuesday. The Negro ordered some meat. When Niesenbaum turned around the bandit flashed a revolver. Carl filling station attendant at Fourteenth and Jllinois Sts., told police he was robbed of sl2 by a youthful bandit. Michael Warren, postal service manager at the Real Silk Hosiery Company, told police that stamps totaling $5lO was lost from a company truck. Two reel') of motion picture film, were reported stolen from the Famous Show, 515 Indiana Ave.

EMPLOYMENT IN STATE BETTER Labor Department Reports —Steel Plants Busy. Times Washington Bureau. WASHINGTON, Sept. 16.—The bor department reported today that(| Indiana employment conditions improved during August. Steel plants operated about 80 per cent capacity. Building trades were sufficiently active to employ all resident workers, but coal mines continued to operate part of the time, the report said. A shortage of machinists and molders was reported in Indianapolis. The building program is absorbing many workers, and it is difficult to supply the demands for farm labor, it was said. In Evansville the furniture factories were reported as working only PArt time, but a $2,000,000 shop and yartis program by one railroad and a $350,000 roundhouse program by another, were reported. In the Terre Haute-Clinton district, mines were reported still on part time, with building contractors taking many workers and factory employment reported “fair." TO Bt ILD DYNAMITE PLANT Bu T’nited Press Wilmington, Dei., sept, is.— E. L. Dupont de Nemours has taken, an option on 1.200 acres of land ten miles from Birmingham, Ala., and will build a large dynamite plant of the modern type. It will be designed to supply users of explosives in the Birmingham'mitjjng district and elsewhere in the south Atlantic and gulf States. —f Automobiles for Sale "" 1 J; 1 '.X K ‘ S 'J 1 7’■ coupe: will pell J at reduced price on very easy terms oM hberal trade allowance.
