INDIANA RIVERS INTO LOWLANDS ■ I ' (Cordinued From Page 1) flour, which started about 7 p. m., Vut retched its greatest Intensity beWreite 11 and midnight. A heavy electrical storm accomjgijuied the cloudburst in the city and cdsJ considerable damage. Bean Creek Out of Banks Bean Creek, at Holliday and Shelby Sts., was out of its banks at 1 a. m. today, and Lieut. Walter Claffey was placed in charge of a detail of police to warn residents in case of serious danger. Motorpolicemen also Investigated Pleasant Run, which washed the re * taining wall out of the east and north side of the bridge at Prospect St. The gushing water was “eating •away’’ the bride supports and sidewalk. Red lights were posted to warn persons. White River had overflown its banks and continued risipg at the rate of two Inches an hotir at Wa verly, sixteen miles southwest of the city on the Bluff Rd. Water was beneath eight houses along the river bank and threatened to force several residents to vacate their homes, according to E. D. Rhoads, Waverly merchant. Population of the town is about 100. The river also was high at Anderson and Noblesville and continued to rise during the day. Flood stage had not been reached. Transportation Held Up Transportation was held up In some parts of the State as a result of the storm. The train leaving here this morning on the Vincennes division of the Pennsylvania Railroad was held up at Mooresville, where the waters were UP to the stringers of the White Lick Creek bridge. A train coming from Vincennes on the same road arrived here two hours late. On the Big Four and Pennsylvania roads west of Terre Haute trains were delayed for four or five hours by the high waters, while the Illinois Central cancelled its morning train to Effingham. . Several washouts on the C. & E. 1.. south of Terre Haute, were reported. A wash out on the T. H., I. & E. lines between Greencastle and Brazil stopped service between those two cities. It was hoped that service would be resumed this afternoon. Cars on the Martinsville division of the same lines ran only to Mooresville, but busses carried passengers on to Martinsville. At Tipton, sewers backed up the waters and it was necessary to transfer Union Traction passengers by bus for about 200 yards. A small bridge on State Rd. 12, three miles south of Mooresville, was washed out Wednesday night, according to word received by John D. Williams, State highway commission director. Practically every locality in the central part of the State has reported high waters to the State highway commission. Traffic between Martinsville and Spencer is detouring over State Rds. 22 and 32 because water is five feet deep in six places on- Rd. 12. The National Rd. is blocked west of Terre Haute and State Rd. 10 both north and south of that city. Crop Damage L. L. Needier. Indiana Farm Federation secretary estimated that 50 per cent of unthreshed wheat has been damaged in the State afid probably only 40 per cent of the oats crop. There is more oats in the field than wheat. Due to the lateness of the season the days are short and do not dry out soaked grains, causing them to sprout easily, said Needier. “Several days ago I talked with a thrashing machine man who said that about three-fourth of the grain thrashed in the last few days was sprouted end had little milling value,’’ Needier stated. A week of warm, dry weather would save thousands of bushels, he said. Wet weather has kept the corn fram maturing( making heavy damage from early frost likely at any time. “If we should have an early frost the corn crop would be in jeopardy. Corn is the mere backward this year than it has been in the last five years,” declared Needier. lightning Damage In Indianapolis, lightning struck a street car and dwelling and brought out the fire department twice during the night. No one was injured and damage was slight in both instances. The first run was to the home of D. T. Neat, 530 W. Twenty-Eighth St., where the lightning struck and caused a small blaze which was quickly extinguished. A street car was struck and the roof caught fire at Twentieth and Olney Sts. No passengers were hurt. Motorpolicemen Hague and Petit were detailed to guard a live wire at Speedway and Lafayette Rds., remaining two hours on duty until a repair crew arrived. Firemen and police were called to Senate Ave. and Tenth St. when a Merchants Heat and Light Company pole caught on fire and dropped live wires in that vicinity. Wires Down High tension wires were also down at Ritter and University Aves. Motorpolice were disnatched to the elevation at Sherman Dr. and -the Pennsylvania Railroad when two women were reported in a stalled auto in the high water. They were rescued by neighbors. Both local electric companies reported trouble on their- wires throughout the city. Lights in the neighborhood of Twenty-Third and Alabama Sts., serviced by the Indianapolis Light and Heat Company, were out for a long period after two transformers in that vicinity were struck by lightning. The Merchants Company reported trouble in West Indianapolis and at the Klngan Plant, due to tree Ijmbs breaking wires and “feeders” burning out. Other widely scattered sections of the city were without lights for short periods. Wood block paving, washed out by the cloudburst a week ago, was further damaged during the night. This month may set a record for a “wet September" weather bureau
“Bees* Knees?** He Knows Them
“You needn’t be afraid of bees if you know how to handle ’em,” said Henry Crull, of Huntington, who has exhibits from his apiary at the Horticulture Bldg., State fairground. Crull is shown holding some Italian bees in his exhibit. figures show. The wettest September on record here was in 1896, when 5.17 inches of rain fell. Total fall to date this month is 7.20 inches. Normal fall for th’e whole month is only 3.05 inches.
ALLIGATOR HAS TOWN UP A TREE Bv United Press PATERSON, N. J., Sept. 9. Archie, that aggravating alligator, had the Paterson city council up a tree today. Archie escaped from the city zoo three weeks ago, was caught in the Passaic river by Charles Sisko after he had been variously identified by bathers as a shark, a whale and a turtle, and is now a prisoner in Sisko’s back yard. Sisko demands a SSO reward for catching and feeding Archie. The city has no alligator reward fund. , The Law Council was informed by the corporation counsel that Archie can be redeemed on a writ of replevin if he can be identified as city property. That’s where the tc*te comes in, or would have come in if there had been one to •climb when the heads of the park board called at Sisko’s back yard to identify the alligator.’ . The reptile, kept in a wooden cage by Sisko, either was so glad to see the municipal emissaries that he couldn’t restrain himself, or he didn't like their looks. He flicked his tail vigorously, the bars of the 1 cage smashed and the emissaries hastily sought safer ground. Not Archie “That.” said Edward Sperry, president of the park board, “Doesn’t seem like Archie. Archie was a nice, quiet alligator.” “Still, it looks like Archie,” argued Robert McCrowe, superintendent of t>arks. “Four legs, two eyes long tail—Everything.” ‘lt may or may not *be your alligator,” interposed Sisko, “but I ■want my fifty or he stays here.” The municipal delegation left to report back to city council. If it is found that Archie's footprints are on file in the mud of his former home, the thing may bo easy.
