SOCIETY WK. RECEIVE SETBACK Earl’s Play Runs Fourteen Performances. Bv Time* Kverial LONDON, Sept. B.—Society playwrights, besieging theatrical managers YYith their brain-children, have received theiy P.rst set-back. “The Way You Look at It," by the Earl of Latham, has been withdraYvn after fourteen performances in which its takings averaged only $750. Critics attacked the play fiercely, particularly because of its plot, vjhich involved the life of a poor, young society man who Yvas supported by a rich society woman. Another play of Lord Latham’s — who has been trying for years—concerned the life of a poor woman Yvho let herself be supported by rich men. This one, however, has only been performed privately so far. Other society playwrights are undeterred by this failure. The Dowager Duchess of Sutherland has written one—" That Fool of a Woman" —and it has just been announced that another society play, called "Outposts” and dealing with life on the frontiers of the British Empire, has been Yvrltten by Lady Vaughn, wife of Maj. Gen. Sir Louis Vaughn, in collaboration Yvith Mrs. Helen Guest, Yvife of a labor member of the House of Commons. LONDON PEIS ARE PLACED ON DIETS Fat, Weezy Dogs Reduced for Petting Season. Bu Time * Brtecinl LONDON', Sept. B.—While their monied masters and mistresses are resting up f r om a strenuous social season at the Lido and other resorts, London's pampered pets are going through their annual reducing ordeal. Thousands of fat Yvheezy dogs of all sizes, and thousands more of sleek, lazy pedigreed cats are being boarded out for the rest of the summer and early fall at apinial homes, here or in the country—in most cases with strict injunctions that diets are to he cut down and weight reduced In preparation for another nine or ten months of petting and over-feeding. At the homes, some of which can board over a thousand dogs or cats, the pets are put through strenuous courses of exercise and subjected to vigorous diets. They will return to their Mayfair Homes early in October. thinned full of pep and feeling fine only to drift hack within a few days to their old regime of silken cushions and a thirty-minute daily walk/on a. leash in Hyde Park. GOTHAM FIREMAN SPENDS 42 YEARS 1 IN CITYSSERVICE ‘lt Isn’t Fame We Think of When the Bell Rings/ Says Chief. By Leon M. Siler NEA Service Writer NEW YORK, Sept. 00.—Isa a little more than foriy-tYvo ycnrs now since “Smokj' Joe" Martin went Into the flre-tlghting business. Destiny so ordered things tljat “Smoky Joe" was born and grew up just half a block from a fire station. This was down on Thirteenth St. He listened to fire bells all through his babyhood, and gravitated unfailingly around to the nearby station each day after school when he became of short pants age. No member of the Martin family was surprised when at 19, Joe announced that the New York fire department Yvas to be the field of his quest for fortune and fame. He’s assistant chief now, and knoYYn the country over. His record Is a long succession of citations for courage, fidelity, good judgment. But it isn't fame a fireman thinks about when the fire bells ring. M "Smoky Jbe," firizzled, and pas* 60, remembers plenty of close calls. Back in 1898 he tried to’make his Yvay across the third floor of a burning building on Walker St. He took a few steps, then went crashing through to the basement. On this and half a dozen other occasions “Smoky Joe” had to go to a hospital. Scars on his body are almost as numerous as words of praise on his efficient record. But it isn't of his own safety of which a fireman tlunks when the fire bells ring. Here in Netv York, the picture that hashes through a fireman's mind as he slaps on his helmet Is a picture of people crouching, terrorstricken, in reddened Yvindotvs. Night Is Worst “Once you see them jump, you never forget it,” says "Smoky Joe." “Night time is worst. As the truck goes roaring along the street, you wonder how many there are to be rescued, and whether you will get there in time. "If you’re going into a congested district, you knotv that In a single building dozens of families may be cooped up. "People 1 lose their wits—for which it's hard to blame them. "They rush madly around trying to saY’e a cat dr a trinket, instead of closing all doors—to keep down drafts —and going to windows to make sure that they themselves will be saved. "And then if they do go to the windows, instead of climbing the fire escapes or waiting for lad™ ders, they jump. "It s a strain to think of these I things every time there's an %larm, I tell you. I’ve had forty-two years of it —I know.” Jumps to Ladder But there was no lack of self-con-trol on the part of a man Chief Martin saw rescued in a New York fire of about a month ago. “I saw him in a window seventy-, j* five feet from the ground as I got ! there,” Martin tells. 1 “Smoke Yvas pouring out around him, and I said to myself: ‘He's gone.’ “But an extension ladder truck sYY’ung around oh the fly. “The ladder shot up, and I saw it YY’as barely long enough. "The point of it stverY’ed toward the Yvindow. But the fellow’s perch YY’as too hot—he couldn't wait. His only chance was to meet the ladder half way. "He jumped. And he caught the top rung, and held on. It is encouraging to think about things like that." i MINISTEROFWAR _FLYS 3,000 MILES Argentine Official Makes plane Inspection Tour. BUENOS ATRES, Sept. B.—The "Flying Minister” of the Argentine —General Justo, the monoster of Yvar—is a firm believer int he Importance of the airplane as an arm of the service, and recently made a flight of approximately 3,000 miles, piloted by Argentine's most, famous flier, Maj. Pedro Zannl, on a journey of observation and inspection of the country’s most distant garrisons. A squadron of four Breguet planes made the trip, touching Argentina's borders on the Yvest, north and east. The minister of Yvar’s air trips lasted two Yveeks, and were immensely popular with the Argentine public. • It was made without extra preparation, and demonstrated to Argentina that the airplane has brought the remote outposts close to the office of the minister of Yvar. The trip also helped to reestablish public confidence in military flying, recently shaken by a series of accidents in Yvhich tYvo officers lost their Ut’es. FRATERNITY ELECTS W. G. Holmes, director of the manufacturers' division of the (Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, w unanimously chosen president of thp Beta graduate chapter of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity meeting Tuesday. Holmes succeeds Harold R. Victor of the Eel River Coal Company. C, I-eroy Austin, Yvas re-elected secretary and treasurer aud MajoJ P. Harrison was chosen vice dent.
