PAY HIGH WAGES, •get low prices IN AUTO INDUSTRY Factory Workers Received 10 Per Cent More Salary Last Year. Times Washinoton Bureau. New 1 ork Avenue ■WASHINGTON, Sept. 3.—Higher Wages; "lower prices. The automobile industry is accomplishing the alleged miracle. Worker's in the factories, according to a Labor Department survey just completed, received on an average 10 per cent more pay in 1925 than in 1922. During the same period, according to figures reported to the Commerce Department, selling prices of automobiles have decreased steadily. In several cases the prices have fallen as much as 20 per cent. Decreases in the last year alone have ranged from SIOO to S7OO a car. Wages of male workers averaged $36.67 a week in 1925 and wages of female workers averaged $23.40. During the four-year period average earnings of male workers increased from 66.2 to 72.9 cents an hour. The highest average wage paid for 50.3 hours work in a week was $52.47. Efficiency in the automobile industry has increased remarkably during the last decade. The output for each worker in 1925 was three times that"in 1914, production records show. The results reflect on wage theories advanced by organized lahor. According to William Green, American Federation of Labor president, wages must keep step with the. “workers increasing power of production." “Under a scientific plan,” he has asserted, “the worker would receive a wage in proportion to his productive ability."
