PHOTOGRAPHSOF CHICAGO PIONEERS PUT ONEXHiBITION Collection Buried for HalfCentury in Courthouse Cellar. 8v Timea Soecinl CHICAGO, Sept. 3.—Philadelphia’s sesquiceotennial celebration with its exhibits of rime honored relics has stirred old-timers here into remembering that this city has a “priceless heritage for posterity” and as a result 10,000 picture portraits of pioneer Chicagoans have been dragged out of dusty filing cabinets and put on exhibit at the Chicago Historical Society museum. The collection, started a half century ago, was to have been a fine thing for future generations and for Charles D. Mosher, enterprising photographer, who conceived the idea. Mosher promoted the plan in 1876

it a time when the first centennial of American Independence was being celebrated. His plan called for photographing various and sundry of the city’s esteemed to form a collection which shojlfl be preserved in the vaults of the county courthouse. The pictures were to be taken out for brief exhibits each quarter of a century and in 1976—the second centennnial —should be presented to the city as a collection of great historic value. City leaders heartily indorsed the plan and Mosher made hundreds of photographs for the collection and thousands of dollars for himself. He finished his photographic task in 1883 and the pictures were duly deposited in the Courthouse vaults with plans to take them out for an exhibit in 1901. When the exhibit date rolled around, officials at the courthouse were enmeshed in plans for building anew structure to replace the old one and didn’t have time to get out the pictures. When the old courthouse was torn down, the pictures were moved over to the historical society and forgotten. But reminded of tjjeir own centennial connections by the Philadelphia celehratiqn. the old timers had the librarian at the historical society arrange the exhibit and for the first time the original plan of fifty years ago is being carried out.
