STRANGE PEOPLE. LIVE IN FROZEN* NORTHERN LAND Life Exists in Primitive Conditions Known No Other Place. Bu Unit'd Prre KINGS BAY. Spitsbergen, Sept. L, —Hardy residents of these Islands, only 800 milem from the North Pole, laugh when strangers speak of Spit.abergen as the rim of the earth. To them the real “old north” la many miles further on, among the nameless settlements near Point Morris Jessup. Greenland. There peoplrf among the strangest In the world live In primitive conditions known nowhere else. Commander Byrd, before hts flight to the Pole, planned to establish his base among thesoEskimos, who number two or three hundred. He may go there In the summer of 1927. If so. he will find them as Peary left them years ago—dirty, hospitable and profoundly, content. I’eaiy First Man Peary was the first man really to become acquainted with them and live to bring back the story. ship wintered several times at Morris Jessu|, and somef of--the) natives accompanied him to the United States. Mrs. Peary also took along a girl, Ekrarlsuark who was called “Bill” and exposed for a while to all the advantages *of civilisation. The Peary Eskimos pined for their Igloos and frozen walrus meat, and went home. Two of them became prorftinent in the tribe merely by reason of the tall stories they told. They were eclipsed by one Samik, however, who became a plutocrat when Peary gave him a wooden rowboat In which to fish. Through his wealth, Samik won the hand of “Bill," who after her study abroad was regarded as the tribe's choicest peach. Forgets Civilization As the stories here go, Mrs, Samik proved a good wife, unspoiled by her sojourn In the southlands. The last traveler to see her said she had forgotten all hen civilized ways and was no more squeamish about what went into, the stew than any of her sisters who had not had the arlY'antages of a finishing trip abroad. Nowadays the only knowledge the tribe has of the outside world is when a chance explorer or Scottish whaler happens to come near enough for a kajak-man io row out and trade some blue fox skins, or when a very, infrequent Danish trading agent' comes. Thej' drink nothing stronger than ice water. Their sense of humor jdM pronounced, the tgh few of theWß stories are fit for print. Discomfited travelers who have overbalanced a kajak and got thoroughly, icily wet, have founithat a whole camp would roll laughter Instead of coming to ‘fish them out.
WEEK-END LAKE TRIP PROPOSED Highway Route to Webster Given by Hoosier Motor Club. A week-end trip to Lake Webster Is suggested by the Hoosier Motor Club. BOY HALTS TRAFFIC LONDON —London Bridge wasn't falling down, but it was all tied up when little Danny Riordan, B, got his head stuck between two railings on the balustrade the other day. It took a strong police force, two fire engines, a motor ambulance, a police tug and auxiliary boats, three doctors. a squad of workmen with scaffolding, hack saws, hammers and cold chisels, etc., to get him out. They even used vaseline. A chisel finally did the work. ONE BLAST, 55,000 TONS ISHPEMTNQ, Mich—One blast from the hillside of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company’s Ogden mine here the other day moved 35,000 tons of Iron ore. More than three tons of dynamite were used, and the drills had been worked for several months to sink seventeen 10-foot holes, SIO,OOO FOR SNAKE BITS LINCOLN, Nebi>—A Jury here has ordered the Northwestern Railroad Company to pay $40,000 to Herbert K.
