TRIAL DATES OF HIGHWAY CASES REMAIN UNSET Will Hearing Be Held Before General Election, Is Question. Will the charges pending in Criminal Court against certain members of the State highway commission and others be heard this fall? If so, will the trial be before the general election Nov. 4? Prosecutor William H. Remy, who said the setting of the cases for trial is up to Judge James A. Collins, announced today that he contemplates a meeting with State Examiner Lawrence F. Orr, and Alonzo Blair of Shelbyville, Ind., to discuss the cases. Blair, a former Shelby Circuit Court judge, will assist Remy in the prosecution. Collins said he has not talked with Remy since July 29 and does not know his plans. Collins will not set the cases for trial until requested to do so by Remy, he said emphatically. The cases were set for last June and July. “Anything carried over from the last calendar will not be set again until Remy has had a chance to see me and let me know when it will be best for him to try the cases,’’ said Collins. Remy said no date had been set to meet Orr and Blair, but that he hopes it will be soon. Grand larceny and conspiracy charges were brought by the grand jury in March, 1925, after an Investigation of the highway depart-I merit’s handling of distribution of World War materials. Defendants are John D. Williams, i director: Earl Crawford, former! member; Moses and Victor Goldberg, l junk dealers; George Bartley, former 1 State garage superintendent, and C. 1 William Whaley, machine operator. The cases were passed last June and July when Blair said he would not be able to assist until this fall. The county council has appropriated $5,000 for payment of special coun-' sel. Remy will try grand*-larceny charges against Whaley first.
