IMP FOR ’ PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THIS STATE ' 1 Huge Amount Spent for Buildings and Repairs in 1926. Indiana taxpayers are spending more than eleven million dollars this year on new school buildings and improvements, according to a survey by the State department of public instruction. Os the total contracts let during the year, ending Aug. 1, approximately eight million dollars was spent for city and town schools and about three million dollars for rural. Indianapolis, with its $2,000,000 building program, ranked first. Ft. WaVne was second, with an estimated expenditure of more than one million dollars. Other counties with heavy construction schedules are Allen, $245,000; Tippecanoe, $215,000; Union, $157,000; LaPorte, $124,000; Clark, $117,000; Lake, $115,000, and Jasper, $107,000. Urges Wise Planning Commenting on the report, Dr. Henry Noble Sherwood, State superintendent .of public instruction, said: “When we consider that more than $11,000,000 are being spent annually for school construction, we cannot help but feel the necessity of careful planning. New buildings should be located to serve the maximum number of students. They should be so constructed as to be most serviceable to future generations. Taxpayers may well take time to study carefully the building i needs and plans of their respective communities.’’

GAMBLING, BOOZE BRINGARRESTS Several Fall in Police Net Thursday Night. Police raiding squads were busy Thursday night and several arrests resulted. Sergeant Chitwood, ordered several games of chance stopped at a lawn festival at State Ave. and Maryland St. Pete Babloff, 560 W. Washington St., was charged with keeping a gambling house and four men for gambling. They were playing cards. A thriving brewery was destroyed at the home of Tandy Berton, 215 N.
