ENOUGH WTO FLOAT FLEET IS BOOM U. S. Bottlers of Carbonated Beverages Give Huge Figure for Year. Bn United Press WASHINGTON, Aug. 25.—Enough “pop'’ was sold during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1926, td float a fleet of battleships, according to a survey made public today by the American bottlers -of carbonic beverages here. The consumption of “pop” amounted to 10,002,502,500 half-pint botan increase of 2,000,000,000 over last year's total. The increase was partially attributed to the alleged increased demand for ginger ale for highballs. t Round and Round Globe The “pop” bottles emptied by the American people during the year, if placed side by side, would encircle the globe six and one-fourth times, it was stated. The contents would fill a 625,000,000-gallon reservoir. The drinkers paid $500,000,000 to 250,000 retail "pop” sellers during the year, it was reported. “Pop” Research The soft drink organization called attention to the fact that it had endowed a "pop” research fellowship at lowa State College, Ames, lowa, "where all members can have theii beverages scientifically tested.” It also revealed that Cleopatra, some 2,000 years ago, produced the first recorded carbonated beverage when she dissolved a pearl in a glass of wine. The association traced ginger ale back to King Tut's time. "Townsend Speakman, a Philadelphia druggist, about 1807 hit upon the happy idea of flavoring carbonated water with fruit extracts, while experimenting for anew tonic,” it was stated. MERCURY RISE LIKELY Warmer Temperature Predicted Next Few Days . r Slight rise in temperature for the next few days, without a wave of extreme hekt, was forecast today by the United States Weather Bureau. For several days the mercury has been a few degrees below . normal. Meteorologist J. H. Armingfon said Warmer temperature was recorded in western States and reported moving eastward. Armington said there was no in-, dicatlon here of a freakish heat wave as predicted by the Chicago bureau. TRAIN CRASH KILLS TWO Hand Car on Santa Fe Line Struck By Work Outfit.
