PERMIT CHEAPER TAVING PRODUCTS ON GITYSTREETS Political Leaders Form ‘Amasite’ Bloc to Boost Its Merits. For the first time in many years a cold-mixture asphaltic compounfl has been introduced into paving specifications. "Asphalt macadam surface" now is among the items to be considered by paving contractors. The material specified is similar to the "amasite," introduced several months ago. but used only to repair holes in improved streets. That introduction of cheaper paving will tend to reduce bids in other materials was one theory advanced at city hall. An ‘Amasite’ Bloc It is known, however, that a number of poltical leaders have formed an “amasite" bloc, to boost the merits of that type of material. Their maneuvers were so successful that the board of works failed to authorize funds for operating the municipal asphalt plant in their 1927 budget, estimate. Board members contend that ‘amasite,’ laid by

city workmen, was Vnore economical than maintenance of the plant. The "amasite” the city buys is sold almost exclusively by J. A. McDonald, formerly agent for the Barber Asphalt Company. Recently the city council appropriated more than SBO,OOO, from the city's snare of the State gasoline tax, for maintenance of improved streets under direction of the city engineer’s office. The bulk of the material to be bought from this fund will be "amasite." Turned Down Once Opposed by the city engineer "emulsified asphalt." similar to the cold-mixture compounds, was refused admittance into paving specifications a few years ago. Representatives of concrete interests at the city hall charge that the cheaper material has been introduced to elimirihte concrete. They contend the "asphalt macadam surface" will not produce a solid street with the strength of concrete. Proper take-off position Pictures of diving beauties with their hands high over their heads are good to look at but entirely wrong so far as the diving position of the arms and hands is concerned. When diving forward, the hands should be just a little higher than the shoulders and held so as to protect the face. The take-off is another important point. This has to be taken so that |jhe full benefit of the springboard can be obtaine dand at the same time perfect balance maintained. At first, take a position so that the big toes can grasp the edge of the springboard. Then spring the board down with knees stiff and take off on the upward swing. To let knees bend will not only throw the diver off balance but will make him lose all the spring. The result is that he will kick back at the board and topple over for a belly-whopper. With the knees stiff, the full force of the upward swing of the board propels the diver upward and outward. (Copyright, 1926, NEA Service. Inc.)

BELIEVE MEXICAN CHURCH STRUGGLE WILL EASE LONG Direct Efforts of Episcopate a for Peace Apparently Ended. ftv Unitril Prrtt MEXICO CITY. Aug. 25.--Direct efforts of the Mexican episcopate to seek peaceful settlement of the religious controversy apparently had ended today, and the belief was strengthening that the struggle between church and state might continue for several years, until the Calles regime has been succeeded by some other. The determination of the episcopate committee. Bishop Pascual Diaz and Archbishop Ruiz, both full-blooded Indians, to suspend direct efforts for peace, left the situation where it was when the churches were closed almost a month ago in protest against the religious law promulgated by F'resident Calles. It is well known here that the episcopate has the pope's authorization for cotninuation of the passive resistance program. The Calles administration still has about two years of office before it, and should it be continued in power by the next election there would be six years in which the church scarcely could hope to obtain congressional, judicial or administrative relief from the laws it finds so objectionable. There 1 is, of course, the possibility of revolution. The episcopate has informed Rome of the latest developments, but has not received any communication from the pope, according to Diaz, although a letter was expected today. Foerlgn Minister Saenz’s alleged remarks in San Antonio, Texas, in which he said Congress might give the church relief, were seized upon by the episcopate as an indication of the existence in Mexico of a faction which has discontinued with the current agitation. , LA GUARDIA WITH 6. 0. P. Seeks Republican Renomination for Congress Again. Bv United Pr.ee NEW YORK, Aug. 25.—Repre. sentative Florella La Guardia of New York, who strayed from the Republican ranks when he was elected in 1924 on a Socialist ticket, has returned to the fold. His candidacy for the Republican renomination in the twentieth congressional district had been filed in the offices of the board of elections when the lists closed at midnight. La Guardia was substituted for Walter Cohen, who declined. La Guardia in Congress, started the investigation into disappearance of many cases of Squibb liquor from the Federal Bldg, in Indianapolis.

REPORI HEAVIER DEMAND IN CITY FOR INCINERATOR New and Old Homes Being Equipped—lnstalled by Long Company. Demands for the Home incinerator. installed by W D. Long & Cos., 124 E. Ohio St., are growing and a number of new homes, as well as older homes, are being equipped with them. The incinerator burns garbage and rubbish in a safe, convenient and sanitary way, eliminating smoke, odor, fuss and muss of other means of disposal, Long pointed out. Housewives Relieved "Many housewives and servants are being relieved of the old-time way of garbage disposal, and instead of making that trip to the re-:r of the lot or having that unsightly evilsmelling garbage car. in the back yard, Indianapolis housewives 'who are up-to-date now dispose of their garbage and refuse by use cf the Home incinerator." he said. Long asserted that the Home incinerator would reduce 2->i bushels of garbage and rubbish to a pint of ashes, in a simple, dependable and economical manner. The incinerator may be installed in the basement in a short time, using gas for combustion. The contents of the incinerator burn quickly. With Kitchen Chute The incinerator may be installed with a kitchen chute, in which case a trap door is provided at the base of the chute, or it may be installed with a door in the top for depositing the rubbish from the basement? The heat is circulated through an ingeniously constructed dryer .pipe. Actual incineration takes place in a tapered, self-feeding crematory bowl, directly below which is a specially constructed baseburner which throws two circles of flames outward and upward. The gas ports are underneath a protecting plate to prevent clogging by coffee grounds and other small particles. A dryer pipe or combustion chimney dries out the moisture of the garbage, and the shrunken contents' work their way down into the crematory bowl, where complete incineration takes place. A large, convenient ash pan is provided in the incinerator. Long explained.
