LANGLEY MAY BE FREED TO HELP WIFE’SCAMPAIGN Convicted Congressman Will Be Eligible for Parole Sept. 14. ft/ Times Roeclql WASHINGT6N, Aug. 20.—Former Congressman John W. Langley of Kentucky, now serving a two-year term for violation of the prohibition laws, may be paroled In time to participate actively in his wife’s campaign for Congress. Mrs. Langley won the Republican nomination in her husband’s old congressional district. Vindication of the family honor was one of her issues. * Langley began his sentence at Atlanta Jan. 15, 1926. He will be eligible for a parole Sept. 14. Move for Freedom Politics as well as sentiment is playing its part in the movement to obtain freedom for the former congressman. The Langleys and their friends wield a tremendous political influence in the mountains of east Kentucky. Langley was elected to Congress ten times, the last time'to the present Congress by a larger majority than ever. And this was face of his indictment by a Federal grand Jury. , , Kentucky soon will be in the midst of a heated campaign with the United States senatorship and eleven seats in Congress at stake. Influence will be applied at the department of justice and at President Coolidge’s summer camp if necessary. His mountain friends resented it and the home folks frankly expressed their opinion. The Kentucky organization was worried. Following Mrs. Langley’s nomination came indications of a desire to obtain Lingley’s freedom—and dentally the family’s'good will. If the former congressman Is paroled another movement then will be launched. It is expected, to ob' tain a full pardon from the President in order to restore his civil rights and ’ the privilege of again holding office. is understood to be ambitious to return to Congress. x \

ASKS PLAGUE ON WOMEN Prays for Insects to Bite Legs Under Short Skirts. Bv United Press ANGERS, France, Aug. 20.—The plague of Egypt was called down upon short skirts In a prayer published in a parish magazine here. Swarms of wasps, flies and mosquitoes and other poisonous insects were invoked in the prayer, to punish the supposedly shameless women who display themselves with curtailed covering. A more ''gentle punishment was asked for children considered guilty qf wearing garments insufficiently covering them. The prayer asked simply that the butterflies of the fields might be directed to alight on these children to cover their shame. The diocese of Angers has long been noted for tis strict puritanism. Deam, who 1s representing the Indiana conservation department, Is a member of the Society of American Foresters, American Botanical Society, Ecological Society, American Genetic Association, American Fern Society and Sullivan Moss Society. The Socfety of American Foresters has a meeting during the convention and the Hoositr will appear on the program. Deam is the author of “Trees of Indiana,” and “Shrubs of Indiana," and is now writing a companion book of the set, “Indiana Grasses.”

United States naval reserve camp on White River near Riverside Park, will embark on their annual jaunt to Michigan City, Ind., and a cruise on Lake Michigan. Lieut. Paul C. Denny, commandant, and Chief Boatswain’s Mate Charles Creswell will be In charge. At Michigan City; Lieut. F. F. Knachel, commander at the local camp last sunwffer, will join the two other officers.
