ENCOUNTER DELAY M MOVE TO TRY BOARDPRESIDENT Decision Not Expected at Once on Sanitary Group Proposal. With Mayor Duvall vacationing and scheduled to remain out of the city for a week, decision on a proposal for a hearing on charges against O. C. Ross, president of the hoard of sanitary commissioners, filed Saturday, was not expected for some time. Asserting that Ross had not had the five years’ experience in ' practical and sanitary engineering work as required by law and that he is not a licensed engineer, Clarence B. Joseph, self-styled ’’citizen, resident and voter of Indianapolis,” in formal charges urged a hearing before Duvall with a view toward dismissal of Ross. The action is believed to be a part of the general warfare among board members concerning dismissal of Charles H. Hurd, consulting engineer, and C. K. Calvert, city sewage disposal plant head. Ross has supported the two and Russell T'. Mac Fall and City Engineer George G. Schmidt, the other board members, have opposed them. “If a hearing is held, my side will be presented,” said Ross, commenting on Joseph’s action. The battle is slated for continuation Tuesday with decision on a plea of Hurd that he be permitted to complete the sewage disposal plant. PASTIME OF POLITICS IS MENACED Country Store, Center of Debates, Battling for Existence. Times Wanhinaton Bureau. IS2B Aeic I’orfc Avenue WASHINGTON, Aug. 16.—The great American pastime of politics is threatened. The menace comes through an attack upon the integrity of the country store, center of debates on the political affairs of the Nation. Shortly the country store, cracker box, open-stove door, and all, will be faced with the most desperate struggle of its life. Always harassed by the mail order house, the country store is now going to have that establishment right in its front yard. One of the largest of the country’s mail order houses plans to establish branches in rural centers where a line of samples will be carried and where goods ordered by mail can be exchanged. The country store keepers are desperate. Heretofore one of their chief claims to patronage has been that their customers could actually see and handle the goods they offered. Now with that advantage gone, they predict the dismal day when the mail order sample esablishments will import some sort of anew fangled political spellbinder. Then, it is contended, politics, as the great national sport, will cease to be. Large bows of waterproofed ribbon are seen on many bathing caps this season.
